Gift Serero, a fourth year BBA student at CIDA City Campus in Johannesburg, South Africa, was born in Gauteng in 1983, and from his youngest days it was always his dream to get a good education. Being the third child and eldest son in a family of seven, he realized his role was to inspire and guide his younger brothers.

When he was young, Gift Serero had high ideals, and says, ‘I knew that I needed to change in order to realize my goals, my dreams, and above all, I needed to realize my true self.’

But how to do this? In 2003 the answer came to him in the form of CIDA, a school dedicated to providing South African students with a good education. After joining CIDA, Gift Serero began to think about the steps that he had to take to get rid of the blocks in the way of his realizing his potential. He joined choir, drama, and a Black Management forum in order to boost his confidence and communication skills. He admits that these helped a great deal, but this was still not quite enough.

The major change he noticed was after learning Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation. He says that, ‘This was a strange and new experience for me; I had funny and good experiences during meditation, some really difficult to describe… changes were happening inside me, it was like I was being created anew.’

Now, after his first three years with CIDA and Transcendental Meditation, Gift Serero notices that he is happy, more confident, able to inspire his peers, and that his presence brings joy to family and friends. He even notices that his health and studies have benefited; that he can do less and accomplish more, exceeding his own expectations.

Gift Serero also went a step further. He could have stopped at fulfilling his own desires and improving himself, but instead he was determined to help his fellow South Africans. He began working on a project with CIDA Foundation students called the Youth Consciousness Movement (YCM), the purpose of which is to bring out a student’s talent through writing and art. YCM focuses on creative writing, theatre, music, and encouraging entrepreneurship, with the goal of ending the year publishing a poetry book. YCM also aims to publish magazines every half-year and educate young people about consciousness.

In addition to YCM, Gift Serero offered his guidance in the creation of the Candle Light Mentoring Programme (CLM). In this programme CIDA students mentor younger, less fortunate South African children, using Maharishi Consciousness-based Education to further the children’s studies, improve their grades and offer them important life skills. CLM has helped over 100 students already, by simply by introducing the light of pure knowledge being shared by Gift Serero and other fortunate students of CIDA.
