The Transcendental Meditation Sidhi Programme: Revealing the mechanics of the creative process

Scientific research on the Transcendental Meditation and Transcendental Meditation Sidhi Programme have shown how consciousness can adjust the structure and functioning of the body in order to develop new channels of mind-body coordination.

The liveliness of Transcendental Consciousness or unbounded awareness experienced through these practices has a parallel state of physiology. At that level of the physiology any physical impulse will be the impulse of consciousness. This is the meeting point between consciousness and the body.

In this talk, published in his book Maharishi Speaks to Educators: Mastery over Natural Law, Maharishi explains that the finest state of physiological activity corresponds to the state of Being, the state of pure consciousness, which is completely devoid of any intention. 'The next finest level of physiology corresponds to the state of Being when it starts to become awakened to its own value and rises in the waves of "becoming," he said.

'When Being knows itself, it is called consciousness, which is pure life itself. Although this state of pure life is not yet expressed, there must be some structure of physiology to maintain that liveliness of consciousness.

'The human nervous system can express the totality of the omnipresent value of pure life. In the state of full awakening, the individual lives the omnipresent, universal value of life and experiences "I am everything."

The physiology is a sequential development of consciousness. Any small change in consciousness produces a change in the entire functioning of the body as well as in behaviour and the environment.

Physics helps us to understand the relationship between the body and consciousness, because physics has reduced everything physical to the non-physical value of the wave function.

'On the level of pure consciousness, consciousness is its own wave function,' Maharishi continued. 'The most tender impulse of consciousness on this level has a physical existence; therefore pure consciousness is its own physiology.'

Physics tells us that every level of the wave function is just an excitation of the underlying field—the vacuum state [or more recently discovered, the Unified Field]. Similarly, the whole physiology is nothing other than the impulses, or excitations, of consciousness. Only when the functioning of the nervous system is completely normal on every level will the state of enlightenment be maintained.

'Every impulse of consciousness has not only a physical value, but also an intelligence value,' Maharishi said, 'which structures the quality of the thought impulse. It is this value of intelligence that makes the body move according to the intention of the mind.

'The Transcendental Meditation Sidhi Programme makes use of this intimate connection between consciousness and physiology in order to culture the ability to create any physical state or activity by mere intention. When one gains the habit of functioning within one's own Self—pure consciousness, the field of all possibilities—one is able to accomplish anything one desires . . . .

'The Yoga Sutra of Patanjali is the engineering of consciousness: through each Sutra, consciousness gains the skill of creating a particular result. The practice of the Patanjali Sutra enlivens the infinite creative potential of consciousness so that every desire in practical life is automatically fulfilled.

'For consciousness to be a field of all possibilities, it must be a field of infinite correlation, with the property of frictionless flow—no barriers in space and time. Only in this state will consciousness be able to structure any specific values of space and time. To achieve this state, consciousness must be as pure as possible.

'Consciousness in its pure state is the simplest form of awareness, the most natural state of consciousness, completely on its own. This is the unmanifest value from where any manifestation is possible—the level of life that is infinitely creative, purely from within itself.'

The process of transcending during Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation Programme takes the awareness to this simplest form; the Transcendental Meditation Sidhi Programme makes the simplest form of awareness more and more lively in itself, in order to create any specification of itself.

'When awareness is fully competent to create any specification, then it knows Aham Brahmasmi, "I am everything, I am great, I am Brahm." Then this Vedic expression of the totality of life, from the individual "I" to the universal existence, becomes a living reality structured on the level of the physiology itself.'

When the whole of consciousness is completely awake to itself, this fully enlivened physiology projects the full awakening of the individual to his universal reality.

'When consciousness is able to create anything it desires, then the ultimate awakening of enlightenment comes: consciousness is the essential constituent of all the expressions in creation. One then experiences a continuum of life in terms of consciousness—in terms of one's own Self, ' Maharishi said.

'Both the Veda and modern science present the same theme of life. The Veda is pure knowledge—the state of consciousness where the knower is fully awake in its Self, the field of all possibilities. By opening the intellect to the full range of matter, from the gross to the subtlest, which is pure subjectivity—or consciousness—modern science, too, opens the field of pure knowledge and finds everything in terms of the Self.

'Perfect mind-body coordination is the realization of the full potential of individual life. On that basis one rises to the supreme level of behaviour where one's territory of influence becomes the entirety of the universe.'

Results of continuing research on the Transcendental Meditation and Transcendental Meditation Sidhi Programme are establishing consciousness as a field of all possibilities. This practical technology of consciousness is culturing and enriching life so that it finds its true dignity in its full potential of all possibilities.
