'This state of immortality through change is seen in the whole creation; everything in Nature is always changing, but the totality of the universe goes on and on,' Maharishi explains.

Maharishi speaks to educators about immortality

This talk was given by Maharishi at an International Congress for Research on Higher States of Consciousness held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 24-26 January 1980. It is presented in Maharishi's book Maharishi Speaks to Educators: Mastery over Natural Law, and gives educators a glimpse of the possibilities available through the practice of Transcendental Meditation and the Transcendental Meditation Sidhi Programme and Consciousness-Based Education

Maharishi began by explaining that every state of consciousness has a corresponding state of physiology; it is possible through physiological measurements to determine precisely an individual's state of consciousness.

'The supreme state of consciousness, which is eternal, non-changing, and immortal, must have a corresponding state of physiology. Such a physiology will also have the character of immortality,' he said.

'Immortality of the physiology does not mean a static state of non-change, but rather a state in which change itself creates a physiology that perpetually maintains its stability, or homeostasis, without becoming exhausted or stressed. This state of immortality through change is seen in the whole creation; everything in Nature is always changing, but the totality of the universe goes on and on.'

In the process of evolution two forces are always functioning together: the destructive aspect of Natural Law and the constructive aspect of Natural Law. The constructive aspect of Natural Law is responsible for the growth of the body, while the destructive aspect is responsible for its decay.

'Longevity results from a happy and fulfilled state of life,' Maharishi continued. 'The greater the degree of pure consciousness, bliss consciousness, lived in daily life, the longer the lifespan will be.'

Maharishi Ayur Veda is the aspect of Vedic Literature dealing with the science of perfect health and immortality, both for the individual and for the whole society. Perfect health on the level of society is expressed in Rk Veda as Samitih samani, 'a society established in evenness, sameness, harmony'. Despite all the differences on the surface level, all the individuals in society can live the same universal level of pure consciousness and bring fulfilment to this Vedic ideal of life.

'When all the people live pure consciousness and enjoy the same support of Natural Law, both the individual and society will be free from problems and will find fulfilment. All the different values in society and all the divergent systems of living in the world today will be fulfilled through our programme to develop higher states of consciousness and raise life to immortality.'

According to the Vedic Tradition of knowledge brought to light in our time by Maharishi, it is possible for the human nervous system to gain the state of immortality, simply through a deeper knowledge of the Laws of Nature responsible for the ageing process.

Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation and Transcendental Meditation Sidhi Programme is the technology of immortality; it has been scientifically shown to reverse the ageing process.

With Maharishi's revival of the Vedic wisdom, ageing is no longer something fearful but rather an opportunity to unfold our full potentiality. Not only will we gain immortality, but we will gain it in the state of enlightenment. Modern science is on the verge of uncovering the ultimate value in the field of the unknown—immortality.

'Immortality is pure consciousness, the field of pure knowledge, the total organizing power of Nature,' Maharishi said. 'This is the field of all possibilities, the infinite potential of life, bliss consciousness. This is the glory of the scientific age—scientific discoveries are now being rewarded with bliss.'
