Living the fulfilling experience of pure consciousness as an all-time reality is the state of enlightenment or Self-realization.

An explanation of Unity Consciousness

During this talk given in La Antilla, Spain, in the Spring of 1973, and published in his book Maharishi Speaks to Students: Mastery over Natural Law, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi said that deep within the relative changing aspect of life is the field of non-change.

'Modern physics locates this non-changing field of the Absolute in the state of least excitation—the vacuum state [now known to physics as the Unified Field]. This is the level of the unmanifest, beyond the finest relative existence,' Maharishi said.

'All action in the relative field of life is based on this field of no activity, which is described by physics as the vacuum state and by the Science of Creative Intelligence as the Absolute.

'One's knowledge depends upon the level of awareness with which one experiences the environment. Reality is different in different states of consciousness, and each view of reality is valid on its own level.

'Both unmanifest and manifest are the reality of life. Our experience of the world is different depending on which value is predominant in our vision. ''The world is as we are.''

'The reality of life is experienced differently in different states of consciousness [waking, dreaming, deep sleep, or Transcendental Consciousness], because in each state of consciousness our physiology functions differently.'

There are two views of reality, Maharishi continued—one is that creation comes from the unmanifest, and the other is that the unmanifest never manifested. These are two different realities belonging to two different states of consciousness, and each is true on its own level.

In the waking state of consciousness, one is completely identified with the objects of perception. The object is the only reality; the Self is non-existent.

In Transcendental Consciousness nothing exists but unboundedness. In Cosmic Consciousness one experiences unbounded awareness, the Self, along with boundaries of relative life.

'Unity Consciousness is the experience of Being as the source, course, and goal of everything,' Maharishi continued. 'In this state of consciousness, one experiences the ultimate, unmanifest, unbounded, unified value of life.

'The waking, dreaming and sleeping states of consciousness are the relative states of consciousness because they are always changing.

'The absolute state of consciousness is that non-changing state of pure consciousness, which remains constant through all the cycles of waking, dreaming, and sleeping.'

Living this fulfilling experience of pure consciousness as an all-time reality is the state of enlightenment or Self-realization.
