Maharishi University of Management students gain qualities necessary for success Competing in a field of 32 teams from around the country, a team of Maharishi University of Management students placed sixth at a national mediation tournament recently held in Chicago. In addition, student Ray Baptiste placed eighth individually out of the nearly 100 students competing. Mediation, the peacemakers' conflict resolution, is growing in importance and M.U.M. students have been learning and practicing this skill in regional tournaments. In September, Maharishi University of Management hosted its first mediation competition and training led by Richard Calkins, a highly regarded mediation trainer and adjunct professor at John Marshall Law School in Chicago. The M.U.M. team took second place in the tournament. During these tournaments, students have to act out and mediate real life and often complex legal cases that a group of attorneys deemed more suitable for mediation than court and collected them for the benefit of aspiring young mediators. Coach Vicki Alexander said that the students' success was remarkable, given that they had much less experience than the other participants in the Chicago tourney. Ray Baptiste and Katie Cleary had participated in an earlier tourney in Wisconsin, while Puki Freeberg had never participated prior to going to the national tournament. Ms. Alexander said that the students' ability to come up with creative solutions played a big role. She attributed this to their ability to maintain broad comprehension while focusing on fine details.
