Wise advice to graduating students for ensuring success

On July 2, 2008, Dr Howard Settle, founder of the Dr Howard and Alice Settle Foundation, addressed the 2008 graduates of Maharishi University of Management. In his commencement address Dr Settle gave five points of wisdom, drawing from his own life experience:

Point 1: Make good use of the knowledge and techniques you have been given.
Dr Settle reminisced about a neighbour when he was growing up who had a new Volvo. The neighbour never used the car because he said he could not afford the gas. Dr Settle reviewed all the possibilities that his neighbour missed by not driving the car.

He reminded the 2008 MUM graduates that they have received tremendous knowledge from Maharishi University of Management. They have at their disposal Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation Technique and many have also learnt Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation Sidhi Programme. These provide the key for unfolding one's full unbounded potential.

The graduates also have the knowledge of Maharishi Ayur-Veda to maintain balance in their physiology and promote long life and good health. They have knowledge of Maharishi Jyotish to predict difficult time periods, and they have access to the Maharishi Yagya Programme to avert the danger before it arises. They also have knowledge of Maharishi Sthapatya Veda so that they can live in fortune-creating homes.

Dr Settle recommended that the students utilize all Maharishi's programmes so they can lead successful lives and unfold their infinite potential. With this supreme knowledge students don't just have a car; they have a space-rocket to take them anywhere they want to go.

Point 2: Persevere.
Dr Settle reminded the 2008 graduates of Thomas Edison, the great inventor, who said success is 1% genius and 99% perspiration. Dr Settle described Edison's attitude to persevere, in spite of 10,000 failures.

Point 3: Avoid the two most destructive words in the English language: 'I can't.'
Dr Settle inspired the graduates, reminding them that anything is possible; but if they say, 'I can't', then they immediately limit their potential to failure. Dr Settle reminisced about early life with his father. When as a young boy, Howard complained that a task his father had given him was impossible, his father replied: 'Howard, the things that are very difficult, I expect you to do immediately. For the impossible, you may take a little longer.'

Dr Settle offered the advice: Instead of thinking, 'I can't', change your expression to 'How can I?' This allows you to unfold limitless possibilities for success.

Point 4: Learn everything there is to know about your chosen field.
Dr Settle reflected on being given the keys to fly an airplane at age sixteen, having passed his pilot's test. At that age, Dr Settle contemplated being given the keys to fly, knowing full well that there was a lot he did not know about flying airplanes. Dr Settle then realized that his licence represented a licence to learn. Similary, the graduates of Maharish University of Management, in successfully completing their studies, have been given a licence to learn for the rest of their lives.

Dr Howard Settle advised that each student learn everything there is to know about his or her chosen field, going deeply into all the knowledge.

Point 5: Think big.
Dr Settle recommended that the graduates focus on big accomplishments, worthy of their infinite potential. He described how thinking big would automatically bring the fulfilment of their small personal desires. Think of eliminating poverty and creating Heaven on Earth and one's individual needs get fulfilled along the way.

The graduates of Maharishi University of Management will long remember Dr Settle's words of wisdom. More than that, they will remember his outstanding example of unbounded success—thinking big to accomplish Maharishi's goals of Heaven on Earth. Through the Howard and Alice Foundation for Invincible America, hundreds of scholarships are provided to Vedic Pandits and participants in the Invincible America Assembly, thus ensuring an Invincible America.
