Life according to Natural Law through Maharishi’s Transcendental Meditation Programme

All the elements of the life of the individual and society constitute the culture of a nation. Culture is based on the specific values of Natural Law that correspond to the different climatic and geographical conditions in a country.

In a talk given on 26 December 1977 in Seelisberg, Switzerland*, Maharishi explained that life according to Natural Law is the basis of all evolutionary progress, and violation of Natural Law is the basis of suffering and problems. All negativity in a nation belongs to violation of Natural Law and all positivity belongs to life according to Natural Law.

‘It is not possible to live life according to Natural Law by having the intellectual knowledge of different Laws of Nature,’ Maharishi said. ‘Life according to Natural Law can be lived only in a spontaneous and effortless manner.

‘Action spontaneously in accordance with Natural Law is only possible when the awareness of the individual is in constant alliance with the totality of Natural Law in the simplest form of his consciousness.

‘When awareness is in tune with the nature that administers the life of the whole cosmos, then the entire stream of life, thought, action, and achievement will be supported by the evolutionary force of Nature.’

The Laws of Nature govern action in an evolutionary direction. That level of life from where all activity begins is the home of all the Laws of Nature, the Unified Field of Natural Law. ‘Any action emerging from this field will always be evolutionary,’ Maharishi said.

‘The formula to live life according to the culture of one’s land is to establish awareness in the home of all the Laws of Nature.’

Through Maharishi’s Transcendental Meditation Technique the mind settles down to the non-changing field of silence, which is the home of all the Laws of Nature. Through the regular practice of Transcendental Meditation everyone can enrich his culture and thereby raise the dignity of his nation.

‘Cultural integrity means the blossoming of all values that are necessary to culture life and spontaneously promote life in the direction of progress and evolution while at the same time promoting inner freedom, happiness, and affluence,’ Maharishi said.

It is only necessary that one per cent of a country’s population practise Maharishi’s Transcendental Meditation in order to create an evolutionary influence so that positivity increases in the whole population.

‘When life is lived according to Natural Law, the basis of cultural integrity,’ Maharishi continued, ‘then everyone will always enjoy the fruit of evolutionary action and no one will create enemies for himself or his environment. Life according to Natural Law is the formula for freedom from fear, struggle, and tension—and invincibility for the nation.’

Maharishi explained that mixing of cultures has been the basis of great confusion and stress in the community. ‘Purity of culture is the basis of progress, enrichment, and fulfilment,’ he said.

The enlivenment of the pure field of Natural Law in the awareness of those practising the Transcendental Meditation and Transcendental Meditation Sidhi Programme is purifying the mixed values of culture in all lands and enlivening the basic traditional values of every culture. ‘Every culture will blossom in its individual dignity and, at the same time, radiate the universal value of Natural Law at the basis of all cultures.

‘The invincibility of a nation is based on its cultural integrity, and is a reflection of the strength of Natural Law and the degree of coherence in national consciousness. The growth in international events expresses the rise of Natural Law in world consciousness. The values that uphold Natural Law—evolution, happiness, and friendship—are blossoming into the rising sunshine of the Age of Enlightenment,’ Maharishi concluded.
