Developing unbounded awareness to culture the understanding and emotions of the student

On 22 August 1974 Maharishi addressed the International Conference, ‘The Science of Creative Intelligence in Health, Education, and Business.’ This conference took place in Arosa, Switzerland.

During this conference Maharishi said that through the study of literature, intelligence becomes sharper, and emotions and awareness expand. This process occurs through the rapid alternation of the appreciation of concrete values and abstract values.

The same process is accelerated in the practice of Transcendental Meditation, in which awareness alternately experiences its most abstract, unbounded value and its concrete, localized values. ‘This process of expansion and contraction develops universal values in individual existence,’ Maharishi said.

‘The excellence of a teacher of literature lies in giving swings to the emotions of the student: the more rapidly the awareness expands and contracts, the more the values of flexibility and stability are cultured in the student, and the faster his speed of evolution.’

The purpose of gaining knowledge is in unfolding deeper and more delicate layers of awareness and emotions. The study of the words of great writers who expressed deeper levels of wisdom in their speech brings depth to one’s own character and expressions.

‘This process of expansion and contraction of awareness in the study of literature purifies the student’s awareness and emotion,’ Maharishi continued.  ‘In the practice of Transcendental Meditation this purifying value of the process of gaining knowledge is greatly enhanced by the natural procedure of opening one’s awareness to unboundedness and coming back again to boundaries.’

Maharishi then said that when a teacher spontaneously develops more flexibility in his emotions and understanding, through the knowledge and experience of the Science of Creative Intelligence, he will be able to enliven and culture the life of his students more rapidly.

‘The same fundamental value of Cosmic Creative Intelligence expresses into the multiple variety of the universe,’ Maharishi said. ‘This understanding about the whole range of creation, from abstract to concrete, is found not only in literature, but in every field of knowledge. Every discipline takes the awareness from concrete values to abstract values and back to concrete values. This is how knowledge progresses.’

Evolution in all fields of life proceeds through the steps of rest and activity. From this universal law of evolution comes out the entire multiple creation. ‘This law is the basis of the beautiful harmony that exists in the midst of such infinite variety,’ Maharishi continued.

‘Human awareness can open itself to the fundamental values of rest and activity, and this is how individual intelligence can culture itself with that unbounded intelligence which created the whole Cosmic Life.’

Knowledge is structured in consciousness. ‘The methodology of giving knowledge lies in expanding the student’s ability to grasp a great range of meaning,’ Maharishi said. ‘Transcendental Meditation expands the awareness to unboundedness and thereby increases learning ability. This improvement in learning ability has been verified by scientific research throughout the world.

‘One of the problems in education has always been the difference between the student’s level of consciousness and the teacher’s level of consciousness. The skill of teaching lies in raising the level of the student’s understanding so that the meaning projected by the teacher is the same as that received by the student.

‘By establishing the student’s awareness in unboundedness, the Science of Creative Intelligence increases both the student’s receptivity to knowledge and his ability to grasp knowledge,’ Maharishi concluded. ‘This allows the teacher to fulfil his responsibility to create ideal citizens for the nation.’
