Going within to deep silence during the Transcendental Meditation Technique is like pulling the arrow back on the bow, so that it flies straight to the target.

The philosophy of action: Do less and accomplish more

In a section of his address to the Harvard Law Forum in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, in 1970, Maharishi spoke about ‘the philosophy of action.’

Maharishi used the analogy of a bow and arrow, saying that if we do not pull the arrow of the mind back, then it doesn’t go flying forward ahead.

‘The philosophy of action demands a skill in doing so that we do less and accomplish more,’ Maharishi said. ‘The philosophy of action is pull the arrow back six inches and it'll fly two furlongs ahead. It's the technique of action.’

Maharishi commented that if somebody says he didn't get time to pull the arrow back, ‘They can throw the arrow there—[it’ll be] a dead arrow,’ Maharishi said. If someone says ‘I didn’t get time to meditate’; ‘If someone going to the market says “I didn’t get time to go to the bank”, he can only suffer in the market (audience laughter),’ Maharishi continued. ‘The technique of going to the market is five minutes in the bank—full day in the market will be fine.’

If we don’t get time to go to the bank, we can very well suffer in the market. ‘If we don’t make the mind full of great energy, and intelligence, and happiness by bringing it to the source of thought, the field of Being,’ Maharishi said, ‘then the mind can only be miserable while acting in the outside. It will be loose and weak and being weak, [one] will strain oneself. [One] will do more and accomplish less—get tired by the evening.

With the Transcendental Meditation Technique we can easily and effortlessly bring our mind to the source of thought, the field of Being, and infuse the mind with great energy, intelligence and happiness. Then we can accomplish much more in activity.

Maharishi said, ‘The technique of action demands pulling the arrow of the mind back to the source and then bringing it out for all accomplishment, whatever we want to accomplish. Do less and accomplish more.’
