Transcendental Meditation: Students’ vaccine against stress

Speaking with Irish TV, English teacher, Cliff Yates, said that before becoming a teacher at the Maharishi School in England, he taught for 10 years in three state schools in Cheshire. Describing the difference between the school environments, he was surprised that the children at Maharishi School would sit still, close their eyes, and meditate [Transcendental Meditation (TM)] every day. 'I could [meditate] with them, and when I opened my eyes they were still there!’ he remarked. ‘They sit down, close their eyes, and do something which they seem to enjoy doing.’ He continued, ‘TM produces a state of restful alertness . . . the body is rested and yet the mind is alert.’

Describing the effect the Transcendental Meditation Technique has on the students’ activity, he said, ‘In the lessons, they’re really relaxed, much more relaxed than they are at any other school. They tend to be less stressed on the whole. And also they’re more alert, more awake. That’s a really good ground for teaching.’

Exams present a very stressful episode in the lives of many students. What’s the best way to deal with all that anxiety? Irish TV interviewed a young man named Jamie who practises the Transcendental Meditation Technique. Two years ago, while he and his classmates prepared for Leaving School Certificate exams, Jamie said some of his fellow students got ill from the stress. After learning TM, Jamie said, ‘I was able to sleep better at night and had a lot more energy to study, and that helped my stress levels.’

Now a second year student in Trinity, Jamie still meditates. ‘I actually find that TM helps even more now, particularly when the exams become more difficult, more arduous. I find that when I need to put even more hours into my study during the day, getting energy and relaxation from TM really helps.'

Diedre, an experienced teacher in the primary, special needs, and third level sectors, also teaches the Transcendental Meditation Programme. ‘As an educator, I see that TM is the missing element in education. It acts as a vaccine against stress for the student.' Diedre says that when students practise Transcendental Meditation she sees an improvement in their concentration, memory, reasoning skills, and reaction time—an observation borne out by hundreds of scientific research studies.

‘TM leaves the students happy and contented within themselves,’ she noted.
