Maharishi University of Management faculty to present at national solar energy conference
by Maharishi University of Management, Fairfield, Iowa, USA, The Review

Sustainable Living faculty members Lonnie Gamble and David Fisher will present three papers at the annual conference of the American Solar Energy Society next month in North Carolina. The papers will also be published in a book of conference proceedings.

Dr. Fisher will present a paper coauthored by Mr. Gamble about the many sustainable features of MUM's Sustainable Living Center that's currently under construction, from its being off the grid in every respect, to the use of whole trees as beams, to the edible landscape.

Mr. Gamble will present a paper coauthored with alumni Troy Van Beek and Robbie Gongwer about the social and technical issues involved in the planning, execution, and successful implementation of a renewable energy
project in Angoon, a remote native community in Alaska. A team from MUM installed demonstration projects related to energy efficiency, solar hot water, solar energy, wind power, and real-time monitoring of energy and
renewable resources.

In addition, Mr. Gamble will give a presentation on the Sustainable Living curriculum at MUM and how the discipline is rooted in solar energy.

This is a major national conference with over 5,000 attendees.

"We're one of only a few organizations that had more than one paper accepted," Mr. Gamble said. "We've started to be looked to as leaders in the developing academic discipline of Sustainable Living, for the projects done by our students and faculty, and for the groundbreaking Sustainable Living Center. We feel that Maharishi's insights into the development of consciousness are essential to the full expression of the discipline, and we look forward to sharing those insights with our colleagues working at the frontiers of sustainability."

Also, last month Mr. Gamble and faculty member Travis Cox attended a conference at Luther College on integrating sustainability across the curriculum. It was attended by about 100 people representing many of the top tier colleges across the Midwest.

"Although MUM is looked to for leadership in developing a sustainability curriculum, we are a bit behind many institutions in implementing it as part of a liberal education across the curriculum," Mr. Gamble said. "We got many ideas for starting this discussion at MUM. It was encouraging to see the work being done by a number of the Midwest's leading institutions."
