Five outstanding residents of Fairfield, Iowa, were honored with Maharishi Awards at Maharishi University of Management's 37th Autumn Celebration, held September 23.

Dr. John Ikerd was honored for his pioneering work in economics, sustainability, and natural resources. The author of seven books, Dr. Ikerd recently moved to Fairfield from Columbia, Missouri, where he had been a professor of agricultural economics in the College of Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources at the University of Missouri. He learned the Transcendental Meditation technique earlier this year and is a guest faculty member at MUM.

MUM graduate Julie Stephens was recognized for contributions to the community as a two-term president of the Fairfield Chamber of Commerce as well as co-founder, with her two sisters, of the popular Revelations Cafe and Bookstore.

Dr. Larry Nash and Dick Reed received a Maharishi Award for their work in preserving the historic Maasdam Barns, at the south end of Fairfield near the Fairfield Loop Trail. The barns, built just over a century ago, had been threatened with destruction when the nearby Highway 34 bypass was constructed. An illustration of the early 20th-century draft-horse breeding business, the barns provide a window into an earlier era of American life. The project includes a museum and a welcome center. Nash and Reed are hands-on members of the Maasdam Barns Preservation Committee, which negotiated with the Iowa DOT to adjust the route of the bypass and leave the historic site intact.

Deb Cardin, CEO of Jefferson County Health Center, was honored for her leadership in promoting community wellness. This past spring she was named one of 100 Great Iowa Nurses in 2012.

As a traditional part of the celebration, community leaders presented achievements from the last quarter, including Mayor Ed Malloy for Fairfield as well as achievements from the University, Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment, and Maharishi Vedic City.

These quarterly seasonal festivals have been a long-standing tradition since Maharishi Mahesh Yogi first introduced them in 1976 to recognize outstanding community members for their vision, creativity, and achievement and to begin each new season with a momentum of success.

“Of all the inspiring events we have on our campus throughout the year,” said Dr. Craig Pearson, MUM Executive Vice President, “these four seasonal celebrations are always among the best. Celebrating distinguished people for their service to our community creates a special kind of fulfillment for everyone.”
