The success of several undergraduate programs that have had strong interest among undergraduate students has inspired Maharishi University of Management to launch master's degrees in these same areas, with the ultimate goal of eventually offering half a dozen MA programs online via distance education.

As previously reported in The Review, the MA in Maharishi Vedic Science began to be offered via distance education this month. And next fall, a new MA in Media and Communication will launch on campus that will focus on filmmaking.

Other new MA programs being planned are Sustainable Living and Integrative Health. The MA in Sustainable Living, targeted for fall 2014, will focus on creating sustainable communities.

The MA in integrative health, inspired by the success of the undergraduate program in physiology, will focus on integrating science-based alternative medicine into health care. It will offer two tracks: 1) Health Professionals, which will entail online courses that satisfy the requirement for continuing medical education for those already in the field, and 2) Wellness Consultants, which will be an extension of the current noncredit program already being taught online via distance ed.

In addition, materials are now being prepared for an online MBA, and planning is underway to offer the MS in Computer Science via distance ed. The latter program currently has an option in which the students take part of the degree via distance ed after taking the first portion of their coursework on campus. The new program would teach the entire degree via distance ed.

Several of the planned programs have been approved by the University's accrediting body, the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. MUM will be applying to HLC for approval for the Sustainable Living and Integrative Medicine in the coming year.

For those master's degrees that are completely new, MUM plans to offer them only on campus for the next three to four years. Then once they are well established, they will also be offered via distance education.
