This autumn, 124 students arrived at Maharishi University of Management from 22 countries for the MS in computer science (ComPro), which represents a record entry for the program. The largest numbers are from Nepal, Bangladesh, China, and Egypt. This also helped boost MUM’s enrollment to a new record—well over 1,400 students, including about 130 in South Africa.

Two generous donors saw the potential to increase ComPro enrollment and funded a highly successful Facebook ad campaign which contributed to the record number. According to Craig Shaw, director of recruiting for the Computer Professionals Program, students also discovered the program through LinkedIn and Google.

The new arrivals will bring the total number of Computer Professionals students to nearly 760, with about 330 of those on campus and the rest in the practical training phase of their program working at U.S. companies such as Microsoft, IBM, Google, AT&T, and Wells Fargo.

The program has lots of unique features,” said new computer professionals student Amyo Kabir from Bangladesh. “For example, the use of the block system, and the Transcendental Meditation technique, which is helpful for learning and to be creative. Also they are providing organic food.”

“This program is helping me to save time,” said Purevsuren Minjuur from Mongolia. “Our program is unique because we are in class on campus for the first 8 months, then we continue our studies through distance education while working at a U.S. company.”

The large number of computer students has necessitated renovating residence hall 152 and as many as four rooms in Verrill Hall for classrooms.

Also contributing to the record enrollment is the approximately 115 students at Maharishi Invincibility Institute in South Africa who are enrolled in MUM's BA in business. Students at this partner institution enroll through MUM for the final two years of their undergraduate degree. Their courses are taught by MUM faculty via videoconferencing as well as in person.

In addition, there are another 15 South African students in an MUM MBA program taught to employees at Neotel, a telecommunications firm that has offices in Midrand, Johannesburg, Capetown, and Durban.

The second largest student group on the MUM campus is enrolled in the MBA program, including the MBA for accounting professionals. The largest undergraduate major is media & communications with 54 students.
