Tamara Day came to Maharishi University of Mangement (MUM) from Austin, Texas, where she worked as a nanny and preschool teacher for 14 years. Some of her friends practice the Transcendental Meditation technique, so Tamara visited Fairfield from time to time. She enjoyed the quiet atmosphere of Fairfield, and after a visit to MUM she decided to apply. She learned the TM technique in September 2013 and enrolled the following January.

Tamara was drawn to MUM because of the nourishing environment it provides for entrepreneurship and creativity. She is majoring in creative writing and minoring in graphic design, and hopes to become an independent artist writing and illustrating children’s books.

Her goal is to create her books digitally, allowing her the freedom to work from anywhere in the world. Using her extensive experience with children and her understanding of Maharishi’s knowledge, she plans to create a series of children’s books illustrating the principles of the Science of Creative Intelligence, such as “life is found in layers” and “seek the highest first.”

Tamara discovered several benefits from the practice of the TM technique, including more energy, a calmer mind, and improved confidence in her creative process. “A combination of the good teachers here and practicing TM has brought me to a point where I can sit down and write without judging the material,” Tamara said. “I can create and then come back to it later and edit. That’s the most valuable part of my experience here.”

“Tamara’s abilities are versatile; she is a skilled writer but she also is an amazing artist,” said Nynke Passi, associate professor of creative writing. “She has a probing, philosophical mind, and her class presentations are thorough, well-researched, and original the way you’d expect of a graduate student.”

As part of MUM’s Residential Life team, Tamara is contributing to the vibrant student life by planning student activities such as movie nights and baking projects. In her free time, she participates in a slam poetry group called Soapbox Speakeasy.
