Edgard Camacho was born in Venezuela in 1979. Since an early age he developed an interest in figurative art and The Latin New Figuration, although he did not officially begin his art career until his early twenties. He rapidly became part of the list of “Best Upcoming Contemporary Artists” by the National Culture Center in Venezuela, a recognition that helped him to show nationally and internationally.

In 2004 he was forced to move to United States of America and later relocated to Fairfield, Iowa in 2012. He earned a BFA from Maharishi University of Management in 2015 under the advisory of artist Jim Shrosbree.

Learning Transcendental Meditation turned Camacho's figurative art approaches into abstractions: He switched from forms into shapes and from backgrounds into planes.

The Venezuelan artist moves around these two constant elements to understand dimension and space, not only to do paintings, but “visual investigations.”

Camacho says, "In the beginning everything was about drawing defined images. Recently, I became interested in deconstructing human figures to search for shapes. Later, I draw those shapes on bidimensional surfaces to create tangible and intangible dimensions.

"There is a space that connects what is seen and that what is imagined; I chose the human body because it mysteriously and instinctively recognizes that space. I like to go over and over again into a painting, addressing it in a cold and mechanical manner; removing my feelings as much as I can and allowing the artwork to reveal its own personality.

"The art-making process is followed by moments of letting go.  That’s when 'rightness' comes about. . . . by rectifying spaces, I have created a guide to unveil the unknown."

Edgard's art is showing now at the University of Iowa Hospitals. The show is entitled “Rectified: a method to unveil the unseen.” It will be on display until March 2017.

This show is part of the University of Iowa Hospitals’ Project ART series.

The exhibition will be visible in Gallery II, level 8, Colloton Pavilion, Elevator F, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, 200 Hawkins Drive
Iowa City, IA.

Camacho says: “As a professional artist this is a very important show because it`s my first Solo in a public university facility and I would like people to know [who] graduated from the MUM art school.”

Camacho currently lives and works in Des Moines, IA and is represented by Olson Larsen Galleries in Valley Junction.
