Maharishi University of Management (MUM) student Nina Ziv acquired her appreciation for nature from her mother, who is the community gardener of the kibbutz where Nina grew up in Israel. After graduating from high school, Nina opted out of the military service and chose to complete two years of volunteer service in the form of community gardening. Later she also worked in farming and landscaping.

Nina heard about MUM from a friend, and the ideas of stress-free education and the block system appealed to her. She had finally found a university she wanted to attend. Nina arrived in August 2016 and decided to major in sustainable living.

Nina likes living in the MUM environment, where the whole community is focused on self-development. She also appreciates the practice of the Transcendental Meditation program. “I like the morning meditation; it creates a transition between sleeping and being awake.” Since learning the TM technique, Nina has also felt more grounded and focused in her day-to-day activities.

Gardening is not the only aspect of sustainability that interests Nina. After graduating from MUM, she wants to apply her creativity to solve problems on a global scale. “I want to create products that will help people in developing countries live more comfortably and sustainably,” she said.

She hopes to design systems that can alleviate issues such as shortages of clean water, food, and adequate sanitation. She is also drawn to urban innovation that can improve the sustainability of existing buildings. In her free time Nina enjoys rock climbing and taking dance classes.

“We’re excited to have Nina in the sustainable living department,” said John Collins, professor of sustainable living. “Her great intelligence and keen insights are just what we need at this time to create a better world.”
