Maharishi University of Management recently inaugurated the new Center for the Advancement of Latino/Hispanic Health and Prevention.
Founded by Raul Calderon, director of evaluations, and Ken Daley, head of the Department of Exercise and Sport Science, the center will focus not only on health issues and prevention programs for Latinos but those of under-served and minority populations in Iowa.
Both Mr. Daley and Mr. Calderon have been actively involved in community health projects and are responding to a growing need to address minority health issues in the state of Iowa.
As part of a $100,000 grant, they conducted a survey of the state of health of Jefferson County. In addition, Mr. Daley has been at the center of a number of initiatives, including the Jefferson County Wellness Action Coalition.
"With the creation of this center, we hope to become a leader in helping to assess the specific health needs of the growing Latino population in Iowa and to help advance and promote Consciousness-Based health programs to all minority groups living in the state," Dr. Calderon said.
The founders will be applying for grants. They are already working with various state agencies, and Janice Edmunds-Wells, the director of Office of Multicultural Health of the Iowa Department of Public Health, is arranging to visit campus. "She was excited to hear about our new center and will be a great ally in the Iowa Department of Public Health for us," Dr. Calderon said.
