What motivates a person to gain success? And what is the most effective technology for achieving one’s goals?
His Holiness Maharishi Mahesh Yogi points out that the spur to all acquisition of knowledge and to all achievement is greater fulfilment. No matter what the details of one’s goals are, the underlying motivation is always to increase one’s level of happiness. The purpose of life is expansion of happiness.
If one practises scales on the piano for hours, it is for that moment when Beethoven’s piano concerto flows effortlessly from one’s fingers, bringing the deep pleasure of accomplishment. If one studies tediously for one’s physics final, it is for that future exhilaration of graduation, or the new perfect engineering job. Knowledge is for action; action is for achievement; achievement is for fulfilment.
In today’s fast-paced, press-button civilization, the student does not need to wait many years for fulfilment. Fortunately, Maharishi has introduced the
Transcendental Meditation Technique so that anyone can experience the unbounded field of inner happiness, or fulfilment within—first.
Maharishi refers to this as ‘gaining the fruit of all knowledge’—first. When one lives the state of inner fulfilment, then, whatever activity one undertakes, every step towards the goal is a step of greater fulfilment, a step of expansion of happiness. While sitting at the piano, one’s own inner happiness spreads into the practice session; or while reading, memorizing, or problem-solving during long hours of study, the student enjoys inner contentment, irrespective of the external challenges he faces.
Living in the awareness of one’s inner field of bliss, what motivates action is no longer cravings, pressures, or longings—but the simple, natural desire for expansion of happiness and success.
