Accessing inner intelligence

The Maharishi School in Lancashire, England, founded in 1986, is a pioneer in the world of education today, providing its students with a natural way to develop their full creative potential in all areas of life.

Through the approach of Maharishi's Consciousness-Based Education—including the daily practice of Transcendental Meditation—students not only learn the traditional academic disciplines but they experience the growth of their own consciousness, the basis of the whole learning process.

Paul Evans is one of the Maharishi School's exceptional students. His academic achievements rank him in the top five per cent of the United Kingdom. For the past three years Paul has competed with the top 40 per cent of students across the country in the United Kingdom Math Trust (UKMT). He received these awards every year, culminating in 2006 when he received a gold certificate for the intermediate maths challenge in addition to Best in the School Award.

In 2004 Paul participated at the Salter's Chemistry Festival University Challenge in Manchester. Although many of the other schools had significantly larger student bodies, his team received first place in Chemistry.

In 2005 Paul was selected for one of the Foyles Young Poets of the Year Award and was an MMU All Write Competition winner. He credits his school for his writing awards, explaining that his English teacher, Cliff Yates, is an extraordinary teacher. ‘Mr Yates is an inspiration,’ Paul said. ‘Without his guidance I wouldn’t have written anything.’

Recently Paul attended a course at the Imperial College of London offered through NAGTY, the National Academy for Gifted and Talented Youth, where he designed and marketed a hypothetical product for investors. Speaking about the event Paul said, ‘The teamwork was essential. I am sure practising Transcendental Meditation helped me with the teamwork and therefore helped our project.’ Paul feels that TM has improved his ability to work with others, his focus, and his creativity. He said that he can’t imagine not having access to that inner intelligence.

The Maharishi School students delight visitors from all over the world with their remarkable eagerness for knowledge, with their happiness, and with their profound grasp of the deepest principles of life. Paul exhibits this beautiful balance and wholeness.

Derek Cassells, Headmaster of this Maharishi School affirms, ‘Stresses and tensions are released and the nervous system is brought into balance. From that balance come all the benefits, such as a greater ability to focus, and this produces academic results. These results aren’t our goal, they are just a side-effect. What’s important is that the children are so at ease, they automatically enjoy learning, and they can utilize more of their potential. We just bring out what is already there.’

Maharishi School students in Lancashire, England have been extraordinarily successful in national creative writing competitions since 1994. They have been among the winners, for example, in Foyle Young Poets of the Year Awards, WH Smith Young Writers, the Roald Dahl Foundation Poetry Competition and Young Poets on the Underground. Their poems have been featured in the TES Young Poet column and in anthologies. Poems by students have been broadcast on BBC Radio 4 and the BBC World Service.
