Maharishi Mahesh Yogi speaks about developing our awareness so that we can comprehend both the unmanifest and manifest field of life and the mechanics of creation from the unmanifest to the manifest. ‘This is the goal of education,’ Maharishi said.
The main points from a talk on this subject by Maharishi given in Switzerland to an Assembly on The Role of Education in Making the Nation Invincible are published in a pocket-size, four-volume set especially for students entitled Maharishi Speaks to Students: Mastery Over Natural Law.
Maharishi explained that Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation and Transcendental Meditation Sidhi Programme open our awareness to the mechanics of creation, which are the mechanics of pure knowledge, the Veda. The Veda is the eternal expression of the mechanics of creativity, which sustains both the non-changing value of the unmanifest and the changing manifest creation.
‘Insight into the mechanics of creation must be developed in the awareness of the educated,’ said Maharishi. ‘We are presenting to the world a new picture of reality, expressed in terms of the wave function of the unmanifest [from quantum physics].’
Quantum physics establishes the need for the knowledge and experience of consciousness, as brought to light by Maharishi, to make education complete. If the real meaning of quantum mechanics were appreciated, it would be seen that the world is quite different from what we perceive in the ordinary waking state of consciousness, which is the viewpoint of classical physics.
Quantum theory points to a view of reality that necessarily implies the existence of a level of consciousness beyond the waking state.
Maharishi said that the Vedic expression of reality is a very complete exposition of knowledge, but quantum mechanics, having reached the level of the wave function of the unmanifest, helps us to comprehend the impulses of the Vedic hymns experienced from the settled level of consciousness—the simplest form of our own awareness experienced in Transcendental Consciousness during practice of the Transcendental Meditation Programme.
Until now education has been a waking state model of education, training students in the relative aspects of consciousness only. The implication of quantum physics for education is that complete knowledge of reality must incorporate Transcendental Consciousness, the Self of every student, the unmanifest aspect of life.
‘When the knower remains unknown, the very basis of knowledge remains unknown and the purpose of education is not fulfilled,’ Maharishi continued. ‘Now with this understanding of consciousness coming from the field of physics and mathematics and being verified from the Vedic texts, every system of education will be ideal.
