In this lecture, which is part of a series introducing the goals of the World Plan* to students in Maharishi’s book Maharishi Speaks to Students: Mastery over Natural Law, Maharishi speaks on the sixth goal of the World Plan: To fulfil the economic aspirations of the individual and society.
Maharishi began by saying that economics is the value which integrates the different aspects of society, but ‘the study of economics should not be limited to the field of action alone. Rather, it should include all levels of life: action, thought, and the [transcendental] field of pure Creative Intelligence.
‘The nature of life is to grow,’ Maharishi continued. ‘The purpose of economics is to help life grow to its fullness. By unfolding the full potential of body and mind, the Science of Creative Intelligence fulfils the purpose of economics.’
The Science of Creative Intelligence integrates the fields of Being, thinking, and action—bringing them together on the level of one’s own awareness. When action is integrated with pure Creative Intelligence, the result will be ‘do less and accomplish more.’ This practical formula presents the economics of life.
Through the practice of Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation Technique, broader comprehension is developed along with the ability to focus sharply. This allows an individual to be free from pressure while performing his undertakings in the most successful and economic way.
‘Skill in action means performing action while established in unbounded awareness,’ Maharishi continued. ‘This awareness, which integrates the innermost value of life with the outermost range of activity, should be the basis of action of every economist.’
Economics today is volatile because it deals only with surface values, which are always changing. ‘Fulfilment will come to economics when its range is expanded to include the totality of life—the non-changing along with the changing values,’ Maharishi said.
This total value of economics will be able to integrate all aspects of individual life with all aspects of social life, national life, and international life. In this way it will be possible for economics to do justice both to the individual interest and to the interests of society, the nation, and the world as a whole.
‘Through the Science of Creative Intelligence every employer can give his employees the beautiful, natural technology to develop integration of life. In this integrated state of life the employee’s awareness is established in unbounded bliss consciousness, and in that bliss consciousness, every wave of thought and action is an expression of the full value of life,’ said Maharishi.
‘The history of economics shows that progress has been made at the cost of life. Through the Science of Creative Intelligence, economics will bring not only progress, but also the awakening of the affluence of life deep within everyone’s awareness, so that all phases of activity express the state of inner fulfilment,’ concluded Maharishi.
* Maharishi’s World Plan: Over the three decades since 1974, the goals and activities of the World Plan have grown and evolved to become the programmes of the Global Country of World Peace, to create enlightenment for every individual and invincibility for every nation.
