In the present fragmented approach to education, students study only specific areas of knowledge like the sciences, business, and the arts. This fragmented study enlivens only specific areas of the brain, and never the total brain—the student experiences localized functioning, but not holistic functioning of the brain. This brings them only partial value of knowledge, partial experience of life, and partial success in life.
Lack of holistic brain functioning is the root of many problems and mistakes that students make in their lives, which then create so many difficulties for the government and the nation. Schools are in chaos, and nations are full of problems and conflict because of the failure of education to develop the total brain.
All that is necessary to completely change this situation is to give students the daily experience of transcendental, pure consciousness—the Unified Field—within themselves in order to create highly coherent brain functioning, as measured by EEG coherence in the brain. This awakens the hidden reserves of their brain potential.
Unified Field-Based Education or Consciousness-Based Education awakens and integrates the total brain through the experience of the unified, silent, self-referral level of the student's own consciousness, Transcendental Consciousness, during the practice of the Transcendental Meditation Technique.
Transcendental Meditation, practised at the beginning and end of each academic day, is a simple, effortless, natural mental technique, enjoyed by millions of students around the world from every nationality, culture, and religion. It automatically develops coherent brain functioning, bringing holistic benefits to all aspects of the student's life.
This field of pure Transcendental Consciousness, equated today by leading theoretical physicists to the Unified Field of Natural Law discovered by modern science, opens to every student the home of all the Laws of Nature in their conscious awareness, giving them command of Natural Law for all success and fulfilment in life.
One verse in the Vedic Literature says that 'Knowledge is structured in consciousness, the field in which reside all the impulses of intelligence responsible for the creation of the entire universe. He who does not know this field, what can knowledge accomplish for him? He who knows it is established in all possibilities in life.'
From this we see that the quality of consciousness directly determines the quality of knowledge that any student can gain and express in his or her daily life. With Consciousness-Based Education every student will become thoroughly established in the foundation of knowledge—gaining Total Knowledge in seed form. Without such knowledge, the entire field of education is essentially baseless.
According to extensive scientific research, this comprehensive approach to learning promotes the integrated functioning of the entire brain—total brain development—leading to markedly increased intelligence (IQ), creativity, academic performance, and higher states of consciousness—enlightenment, grounded in the totality of knowledge, even as students progress within their chosen field.
Maharishi spoke about Unified Field-Based Education in a press conference in 2007 saying that 'Unified Field-Based Education is the education where the knowledge is Unified Field-based, the knowledge unifies all diversities. What unifies all diversity has a name: Vedic Knowledge. 'Veda' means Total Knowledge.
'Now, what does "Total Knowledge" mean? I will give an example: The Total Knowledge of a building is in the bricks. Bricks make the walls of the building. The building is made of bricks. . . . Now, what are the bricks made of? Total Knowledge of the house means knowledge of the bricks. Now, Total Knowledge of the bricks means knowledge of the grains with which the brick is made—Total Knowledge of the grains, not only the knowledge of the concrete grains, but the knowledge of the connecting space between the grains. Total Knowledge does not mean only the grains of the concrete, but that which puts the grains together. That is not a grain, but it is space, which is not grainy, is not material, but it makes a link between two grains—the space.
'"Total Knowledge" means what connects the grains, and not only what connects the grains, but what is on one side of the space that is connecting one grain and the other side of the space connecting other grain. So it is not the space alone, it is not the grain alone. That means it is not the knowledge of the space alone, it is not the knowledge of the grain alone, but the knowledge of something mysterious that connects one grain with the other grain. We say "space"—the space.
'All these different areas of knowledge together make the knowledge unified. That means, so many different levels of knowledge and not only them, but something that puts them together. That is the unified state of knowledge. The unified state of knowledge is from the age-old tradition of Total Knowledge, the knowledge of the Veda.'
Through this integrated approach to knowledge, which combines intellectual understanding of the Unified Field through modern science with direct experience of the Unified Field through Vedic Science and Maharishi's technologies of consciousness—the Transcendental Meditation and Transcendental Meditation Sidhi Programme—students gain complete mastery of the Unified Field—mastery of Total Knowledge, mastery of Natural Law.
