At a World Assembly on Education at the International Capital of the Age of Enlightenment in Seelisberg, Switzerland, in July 1977, Maharishi spoke about young people today, who are increasingly aware that the potential of human consciousness is much greater than that which has been experienced generally in the past.
Maharishi Mahesh Yogi formulated a systematic, scientific procedure to develop the full potential of human consciousness. The Science of Creative Intelligence and its practical aspect, the Transcendental Meditation Programme, combine the ancient Vedic wisdom with the principles of modern science.
The first stage of Maharishi's programme for the development of higher states of consciousness is the experience of silence within the Self—pure consciousness—through the Transcendental Meditation Technique.
Through the regular practice of this technique, the nervous system becomes increasingly pure, and pure consciousness is experienced more and more clearly. On the basis of the growing experience of pure consciousness, the student begins the practice of Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation Sidhi Programme, which makes the wholeness of consciousness active within itself.
'Through the Transcendental Meditation-Sidhi Programme the student begins to experience and understand that a level of unmanifest activity exists within the Self,' Maharishi said. 'When the student functions from this level all his desires are fulfilled by mere intention.
'The final stage of growth of higher states of consciousness is to experience that activity and silence are one. This is Unity Consciousness, the highest level of enlightenment, in which all values of life are unified as a single wholeness in one's awareness.'
By studying all disciplines in the light of the Science of Creative Intelligence, the student sees that his experience of the development of consciousness is based on the same principles of Creative Intelligence that are expressed in the different disciplines. The Science of Creative Intelligence thus provides a unifying basis for all the traditional academic disciplines.
'The leaders of society are those who best express the potential of their time,' Maharishi said. 'As the importance of enlightenment grows in the awareness of the world, the leaders in society will be those enlightened individuals who are established in unbounded awareness and are at home with every field of knowledge.'
