Global Good News: Excellence in Action

Even if you’re not a history/poli sci buff (I’m certainly not), you’ll probably be intrigued, as I was, by the idea of establishing a ‘Real United Nations for World Peace’. It has as its main purpose ‘total education’ so that life can be lived in its full dignity and bliss. You can simply learn about it, become a member, or naturally be, in yourself, a ‘Real United Nations’.

It was my good fortune to hear about the Real United Nations in a Global Press Conference held by His Holiness Maharishi Mahesh Yogi on November 24, 2004. Maharishi was asked ‘what is the organization, what will it do that the current UN is not doing?’ The response, I think you’ll agree, is quite expanding.

Based on unity
Maharishi began his answer by defining terms. He said, ‘The words are very simple. “Real” means real. “United” means really unified nations, all the nations in togetherness. This is to be a real structure, a real phenomenon—something real. . . . “United Nations” means all the nations are in one holistic structure with all the different energies of the different nations unified. Everyone would like to have nations in harmony with each other . . .’

Maharishi then pointed out that life, on all levels—individual, societal, and national—has both a unified aspect and a diversified aspect. The unified aspect, known by modern science as the Unified Field, is the basis of diversity. ‘Based on unity, the source of all diversity,’ Maharishi explained, ‘the United Nations will be a Real United Nations.’ He continued, ‘The unified, united, Real United Nations means nations based on that reality which is the basis of all the diversity of all nations.’

Maharishi quickly added that there is no denial of diversity. Through an analogy, he explained the unified basis of existence which supports all the diversified values. ‘Diversity is being spontaneously administered from its basis, like the innumerable leaves, branches, flowers, and fruits of a tree are served from the root. A gardener waters the root and supplies nourishment to all the expressions of the tree. Like that, the Unified Field, the Constitution of the Universe, is the real basis of unity.’

Bringing the unified level of life to be enjoyed by everyone
Maharishi had earlier expressed that the Unified Field is ‘self-referral consciousness,’ the consciousness of everyone in its pure form, freed from the boundaries of thought or objects of perception. Through Maharishi’s Transcendental Meditation Programme, the awareness of the individual is effortlessly brought to that level of pure or Transcendental Consciousness. And through the Transcendental Meditation Sidhi Programme, including Yogic Flying, that level of Transcendental Consciousness is made lively.

The purpose of the Real United Nations will be fulfilled by its educational programmes. It will, in Maharishi’s words, ‘bring to every aspect of life the basic, fundamental reality of the transcendental field of self-referral consciousness, as discovered through modern science in terms of the Unified Field, and as sung throughout the ages as the glory of God.’

It is ‘through the attention of some people [on the level of Transcendental Consciousness that] unity comes up to be lived in the diversity of daily life and the diversity of nations.’ By educating the people in Maharishi’s Technologies of Consciousness, the Transcendental Meditation and Transcendental Meditation Sidhi Programme, including Yogic Flying, ‘the Real United Nations is going to offer that administrative intelligence which will be unifying, harmonizing, and integrating all the nations on the earth and all the galaxies in the heavens . . . . The Real United Nations will make every nation enjoy the strength, creativity, wealth, and dignity of all nations.’

A bit later, Maharishi brought the concept of the Real United Nations to the level of the individual’s life saying, ‘The Real United Nations is the reality of the unity of the family of nations where everyone partakes of the life of the other. In this case, everyone partakes of the bliss of everyone else. So one enjoys and multiplies one’s own bliss with the bliss of everyone around. Everyone will be living their full creative potential, which is bliss. This is the potential of the Real United Nations.’

Maharishi concluded his answer to the press about the Real United Nations saying, ‘The world cannot remain a suffering world anymore.’
