'Because consciousness is a basic thing, stimulated from there, enlivened from there, having the support of total Natural Law from there, everything becomes very fruitful, very successful, without resistance in life.'—Maharishi

In 2003 students at the Maharishi School in Lancashire, England, which uses Maharishi’s Consciousness-Based Education, had topped the county examinations for the seventh time in eight years, and at that time ranked 12th in the entire country.
This brought up the question during Maharishi’s Global Press Conference on 12 February: ‘How does Consciousness-Based Education work to produce these impressive results in students? And would these programmes work in any school in any country in any culture?’
Maharishi answered that it is because consciousness is the basis of all aspects of life—like the sap in a tree, which is the basis of all the leaves, of all the flowers, of all the fruits. ‘So consciousness is the basis of all physiology; consciousness is the basis of all speech, all thought, all behaviour, all action,’ he explained.
‘Because consciousness is a basic thing, stimulated from there, enlivened from there, having the support of total Natural Law from there, everything becomes very fruitful, very successful, without resistance in life—just because consciousness is the final value. And operating life from the field of consciousness in a conscious manner, life is always blossoming in success and progress,’ Maharishi said.
Consciousness-Based Education, Consciousness-Based Medicine, consciousness-based behaviour, consciousness-based everything—that means Vedic: Vedic Education, Vedic Medicine. Veda means knowledge, and knowledge is consciousness.
‘The pure field of knowledge is consciousness,’ Maharishi continued. ‘Any aspect of knowledge is the wave of consciousness. Any aspect of knowledge is the wave of consciousness. So there is a saying in the Vedic Literature, “handle that by handling which everything will get handled.”
‘So handle consciousness, by handling which all the expressions of consciousness—which means the whole life—will be handled. Handle the sap in a tree, and it is the sap that has expressed itself in leaves, branches, everything of the tree.’
We handle the cause in order to handle the effect, Maharishi explained. ‘It is a very beautiful sequential order of evolution in life, and sequential order of handling every level of evolution in life.’
When we handle the cause we have to handle very little and all the effects are handled automatically. This is what a gardener does. ‘He handles the root and enjoys the fruit,’ Maharishi said.
So we handle consciousness in order to make success in every field of life—in the field of intellect, in the field of mind, the senses, and in the field of behaviour. In every field, we are successful by handling consciousness.
Maharishi has explained that there are seven levels of consciousness—waking, dreaming, sleeping, Transcendental Consciousness, Cosmic Consciousness, God Consciousness, Unity Consciousness. There are seven levels of consciousness, and everyone has to have all the levels of consciousness lively—starting from the transcendental field of consciousness, which is easily reached through the practice of Transcendental Meditation.
‘Application of this value of Transcendental Meditation in the field of administration, and education, and health, and all that, will make life absolutely problem-free and prevention-oriented,’ Maharishi said.
‘It is very beautiful; it’s very beautiful. We are very happy. We are never tired, working day and night for this blissful field of life in the world. And we will create our world—we will create it very happy, very successful. ’
