Education forms the core of culture and civilization. Education is therefore responsible if suffering and problems exist in society.
Maharishi spoke about the important role of education on 31 July 1977 in Seelisberg, Switzerland. He said that the first fundamental of education is to provide the opportunity for every man to develop the full potential of his consciousness, the state of Self-realization.
‘This state dawns with the inner experience of the simplest form of awareness through Transcendental Meditation,’ he said. ‘Education that will produce the Age of Enlightenment must provide the knowledge and experience of pure Creative Intelligence, the state of least excitation of consciousness, thereby developing ideal citizens—individuals enjoying life in creativity, fulfilment, and freedom.
‘A fully educated man is one who has breadth and depth of understanding of the various disciplines and who, by virtue of his fully expanded consciousness, is master of his own destiny. Such an individual feels at home in every undertaking and every field of life,’ Maharishi said.
A systematic procedure to develop the full potential of consciousness is the only guarantee that a man will be fully educated. Maharishi’s Science of Creative Intelligence provides the knowledge and experience that will create enlightened students.
Educators throughout the world are realizing that the fundamental of education is the development of Self-realization, and that the purpose of education is not only the development of the student’s intellectual potential, but the holistic development the individual as well.
‘The basis of education is consciousness—knowledge of the knower,’ Maharishi continued. ‘Until now education was based only on the details of knowledge.
‘Self-realization is the experience of the full and unbounded nature of man’s own consciousness.’
During Maharishi’s Transcendental Meditation the awareness experiences an increasingly settled state of the mind until unbounded awareness, the state of least excitation of consciousness, is experienced. This is the dawning of Self-realization.
The regular practice of Transcendental Meditation develops the state of Cosmic Consciousness, in which the state of unboundedness, Self-realization, is fully stabilized.
The Transcendental Meditation Sidhi techniques, derived by Maharishi from the Yoga Sutra of Patanjali, are procedures for producing perfection in specific abilities and for developing full mind-body coordination. ‘The primary value of the Transcendental Meditation Sidhi Programme is not in the display of the specific ability, but in developing the state of enlightenment—Self-realization,’ Maharishi said.
Scientific research has shown increased coherence of brain functioning during the practice of Transcendental Meditation and the Transcendental Meditation Sidhi Programme. Through regular practice of the Transcendental Meditation Sidhi Programme coherence in brain functioning becomes stabilized in activity.
‘The inner experience of the state of least excitation of consciousness provides a unified basis for all knowledge,’ Maharishi said.
