On 5 May 1971 in Mallorca, Spain, Maharishi said that the seat of knowledge is deep within the mind. ‘The items of knowledge pass through the senses and are deposited at the depths of the mind, and this is how knowledge is gained.
‘Interaction of the different fields of knowledge on the quiet level of the mind gives rise to creative thought and action. This is how knowledge comes out in the form of creative impulses.’
Maharishi explained that the ability to gain and give out knowledge depends upon the lively connection of the conscious mind with its deeper levels, where knowledge is stored.
‘A thought arises on the silent level of the mind. When the level of thinking is most quiet, perception is clearest and most comprehensive, and thought is most effective,’ he continued.
‘Our expression becomes more comprehensive and powerful when we are able to comprehend more clearly on the silent levels of thinking.’
All the different aspects of education aim at enlivening the silent, more comprehensive levels of thinking in order to develop in the student the ability to maintain the inner, more quiet levels of thinking along with the grosser levels of thought and expression. ‘This develops the ability to produce very comprehensive and concrete expressions of abstract ideas,’ Maharishi said.
The study of all disciplines is necessary, but it is not possible for one individual to gain the knowledge of every discipline. This has led to the tradition of studying one subject in depth in order to develop the habit of thinking on deeper levels of the mind. This ability creates a smooth, resistance-free channel for Creative Intelligence to flow out.
‘The spontaneous application of the maximum value of Creative Intelligence is gained through the habit of naturally thinking from a deeper level,’ Maharishi continued. ‘If thinking at depth is to be effective, it must be effortless, because only the most refined impulse of the mind will be effective for greatest comprehension of knowledge.’
By opening our awareness to the source of thought through Maharishi’s Transcendental Meditation, our awareness becomes established in the field that takes in all knowledge and gives out all knowledge. An individual whose awareness is open to this level is at home with all knowledge and is able, spontaneously, to express the maximum value of Creative Intelligence in all areas of life.
‘The centre of infinite Creative Intelligence lies in the silent, transcendental area of life,’ Maharishi continued. ‘By opening one’s awareness to this field of maximum creativity, one is able to draw on the infinite value of Creative Intelligence on the conscious thinking level.
‘The procedure of gathering information is such that naturally the deeper levels of the mind, where knowledge is stored, continue to become livelier and livelier. If quieter levels of the mind can remain lively without disturbance, Creative Intelligence will be maximum.’
Education should not only provide the procedure of gathering information, but should also enable the student to open his awareness to more refined, delicate impulses of thinking and eventually to the eternally silent field of Being.
‘The Science of Creative Intelligence fulfils the grand purpose of education,’ Maharishi concluded, ‘which is to establish the student’s awareness on the ground of infinite silence and thereby to enliven maximum Creative Intelligence in life.’
