Maharishi University of Management Trustee and former faculty member Dr. Vincent Argiro, who together with his wife Dr. Maggie Argiro donated $2 million to help fund the Argiro Student Center, gave the 2009 commencement address at the graduation ceremonies on June 27.
While on faculty at M.U.M., Dr. Argiro developed 3-D imaging software to facilitate research on brain development. He founded Vital Images, Inc. in 1988, where he served as Chief Technology Officer and member of the board of directors before retiring in 2006.
In addition, Father Gabriel Mejia, a Catholic priest who directs 47 shelters for homeless children and youth offenders in Colombia and throughout South America, received an honorary doctorate degree. Thanks in part to generous support from the David Lynch Foundation, over 3,600 young people at these shelters have learned the Transcendental Meditation technique.
Other speakers included valedictorian Narayana Windenberger, a business major, who spent the past 5 months interning as assistant to the CEO of Maharishi Organic Agriculture in Ukraine. "I was pleased to see that my business education at M.U.M. prepared me well to confidently understand the concepts and interact in a real-world business environment," said Narayana.
Communications and Media graduate Puki Freeberg is the salutatorian of 2009. Puki just completed a 16-minute documentary film called "Live ‘n Raw: The 30-day Experiment". She plans to continue working in documentary film and also hopes to work with the David Lynch Foundation. "At M.U.M. I’ve mastered time management and efficiency; experienced that being rested is the key to success in anything; and realized that inner happiness is the only thing that really matters," said Puki.
One of this year’s outstanding students is Shahram Samimi, of the M.S. in Computer Science Program. Shahram is currently working as senior J2EE software developer for ProKarma Inc., in Denver, Colorado. "I learned the TM and TM-Sidhi programs, experienced the ocean of energy inside and transferred it to real life," he said. "I am so happy and totally grateful to M.U.M."
