The structure and purpose of a university

In his book Maharishi Vedic University: Introduction, Maharishi defines the role of and purpose of a university.

He explains that in the structure of a university, there is unity diversified. First one gains unified knowledge, then diversified knowledge. This, he says, is the proper sequence of imparting knowledge. This is actually the most ancient Vedic theme of imparting knowledge.

Maharishi explains that first comes knowledge of the whole, and then knowledge of all the parts. Knowledge of the whole is the knowledge of consciousness, because consciousness is the most fundamental element in creation. The name ‘university’ is justified only if it first provides the holistic structure of knowledge—the knowledge of consciousness, the unmanifest basic reality of life, the total potential of the organizing power of Natural Law.

University then provides the knowledge of the parts—the knowledge of the expressions of consciousness in the whole manifest, diverse universe. The lively home of all the Laws of Nature is available in this holistic field of consciousness. In this holistic value of consciousness, in this state of self-referral consciousness, all the administrators of the universe—the Laws of Nature, known in Sanskrit as the Devas—reside.

He who does not know this field of transcendental, self-referral consciousness, the expressions of pure knowledge, the hymns of the Veda, what can they accomplish for him? (Rk Veda, 1.164.39).

This means that without the intellectual understanding of consciousness, and without the experience of consciousness, the expressions of the field of consciousness are meaningless, baseless, and fruitless. Without first providing the holistic value of knowledge—the knowledge and experience of consciousness, the innermost pure intelligence, pure awareness, or Self of the student—university education is baseless.

Rk Veda says that he who thinks and acts from this holistic field of self-referral consciousness is naturally served by the infinite organizing power of pure knowledge, the holistic value of consciousness.

Maharishi further explains that consciousness is its own technology. If one has not fathomed the field of one’s own consciousness, one has not opened oneself to the entire engineering of creation. This means that study of consciousness and research in consciousness is the most vital aspect of a university, which fulfils the true meaning of the word ‘University’.

Therefore the name ‘University’ is significant only if it offers the complete theoretical and practical knowledge of consciousness. Universities founded by Maharishi offer everyone the ‘fruit of all knowledge’—the ability to live mistake-free life in higher states of consciousness, daily life in full accordance with all the Laws of Nature, with the spontaneous ability to do everything right and accomplish anything.

The specialty of Maharishi schools and universities around the world is to offer every student the whole range of pure and applied knowledge through such a skillful system of teaching that the student develops the ability to spontaneously think and act from the field of enlightenment within himself.

This system of education applied in the context of today’s science-based education to develop the ‘fruit of all knowledge’—higher states of consciousness and enlightenment in every student—is the fulfilment of the age-long quest of the wise and experienced educators of the world to evolve a perfect system of education that could create an ideal man and an ideal society.

Study of consciousness and research in consciousness, through Maharishi’s Transcendental Meditation Programme is the key to this supreme achievement in the field of education for the future of mankind. In his book Maharishi Vedic University: Introduction, Maharishi defines the role of and purpose of a university.
