On 22 August 1970, during a talk at Humboldt State College, in California, USA, Maharishi said that the expansion of one’s territory of influence is natural to life—‘The more a man is able to evolve, the greater values of life he is able to embrace and the more he feels fulfilled.’

Through the practice of the Transcendental Meditation Technique, unbounded awareness grows in the nature of the mind. The mind then finds concrete expression of that infinitely expanding awareness in the growth of the love of the country.

‘Every culture aims at safeguarding its society by offering a daily routine of life to protect man from environmental weaknesses and to develop in him a right sense of values so that life may be lived in fulfilment, in accordance with Natural Law,’ Maharishi said.

The different values of culture belong to the different geographical and climatic conditions of different nations. By following his own culture every individual can blossom in the fullness of life.

‘Religion is just one aspect of culture,’ Maharishi continued, ‘even though it influences every other aspect. Religion shapes the flow of individual and social life towards higher and higher consciousness.

‘Every man wants to be fulfilled and to live the precepts of religion. But if there is no technique to raise his level of consciousness, religion loses its strength because life remains seeking and unfulfilled.’

Maharishi’s Transcendental Meditation is that essential technique that fulfils not only the spiritual pursuits of man, but even his material pursuits, by making him more creative, intelligent, and fulfilled.

‘The holistic ideals of education in the past were not achieved because education did not provide the technique of experiencing Being,’ Maharishi explained. ‘Education and theology aims at Being, at God, but the understanding remained at the intellectual level only and did not become a living reality.

‘The culture of any nation should provide the holistic value of education, which lies in bringing contentment to life. The culture lacks merit if education does not bring life to fulfilment.’

Expansion of knowledge is natural, because it is the nature of life to grow. However, the expansion of knowledge today is so great that it is not possible to gain knowledge of all branches of learning—and yet the individual must have all knowledge in order to live life in fullness.

‘The purpose of gaining knowledge is not the knowledge itself, but the advantage it brings: maximum efficiency in all fields of life,’ Maharishi said. ‘The formula for maximum efficiency is “Handle the cause and the effect will be handled easily and profoundly.”’

He then explained that the one cause of all the varied aspects of life is Being—‘the source of all creation, the fountainhead of all branches of knowledge. For knowledge to be complete it must have two aspects: experience and understanding.’

The Science of Creative Intelligence provides direct experience and understanding of Being and examines its relation to all fields of knowledge. Through the Science of Creative Intelligence one gains the advantage of all fields of learning without going through the study of each.

‘The Science of Creative Intelligence provides the holistic value of education by handling the basis of education—Being, pure bliss consciousness,’ Maharishi said. ‘With this experience the student is able to fulfil all his desires and lives life in fulfilment.

He continued: ‘When awareness is established in unboundedness, then even if it is channeled in one aspect of life it does not remain isolated. All aspects of life are being enlivened and that is what makes us fulfilled for the totality of life.

‘With fulfilment increasing in individual life through regular practice of Transcendental Meditation, more and more fulfilment, harmony, and peace will be radiated in the environment, bringing fulfilment to the cultural values of every nation. As the nation thrives in the value of more and more fulfilment, it will be an inspiration to the whole world.’
