Nearly 200 new students arrived on the Maharishi University of Management campus last month, with preliminary figures as of early September indicating 117 new undergraduate students, and 80 new graduate students.
This is the largest fall entry of undergraduate students in over 20 years, with the biggest draw being the major in Sustainable Living. Approximately 30 of the new students are intending to enroll in that program.
Another trend is that for both undergraduate and graduate programs, there is an increasing number of non-traditional students—those 30-80 years old.
The median age of new undergraduate students is 21, with a significant increase in the percentage of new students in the 17-19 age range, indicating that more youth are becoming interested in consciousness,
meditation, and other progressive values at an earlier age, said Ron Barnett, dean of Admissions.
Students hail from 75 different countries (a new record), including two countries not previously represented: Brunei and Liberia.
Another group of at least 35 students is expected in October, when students arrive who are enrolling in the University's Computer Professionals Program. These students spend six to eight months on campus and then complete their degrees via distance education while working in a paid practicum position at a company.
The Sustainable Living Program will have a total of about 90 students this year. Communications and Media will have 65-70, and more equipment and faculty are being added due to the increase.
