Professor Fred Travis, Director of Maharishi University of Management’s Center for Brain, Consciousness, and Cognition, recently toured the United Arab Emirates, Cyprus, and Holland talking to educators and education officials about the effects of the Transcendental Meditation technique on brain function.
Dr. Travis explained how stress interferes with learning and highlighted the stress-reducing benefits of the Transcendental Meditation technique. He found that there is an increased interest in the technique from people in charge of structuring educational programs. "The people in the Middle East are very ready for this and saw the value of transcending at a very deep level," Dr. Travis said.
In Cyprus, Dr. Travis visited two major universities and found considerable interest from the continuing education department in offering the Transcendental Meditation technique as a course. Dr. Travis also spoke to the Ministry of Education, including the official who is in charge of education assessment in Cyprus.
During his eight days in the United Arab Emirates, Dr. Travis spoke at most of the major universities in Dubai, giving talks attended by students, faculty, and administrators. At the Knowledge Village, which is staffed by American and European teachers, he spoke to over 130 businessmen.
In Holland, at a two-day conference on the Transcendental Meditation technique and EEG, Dr. Travis met with individuals who oversee teaching the Transcendental Meditation technique in Europe and with those who teach the technique.
He explained how the brain produces electrical activity, presented recent EEG research, and spoke about the EEG of enlightenment. He also gave instructions on how to use EEG equipment so that teachers can give demonstrations of how the Transcendental Meditation technique affects the brain.
Since 1979, Dr. Travis has published over 50 articles on higher states of consciousness and the brain and has given dozens of presentations around the world on the EEG patterns of the Transcendental Meditation technique.
