In previous articles, Excellence in Action presented Maharishi’s knowledge about the power of thought from his book The Science of Being and Art of Living.
We now present the next step: the art of action. In this book Maharishi presents seven main areas that cover the topic of action; he also emphasizes the importance of planning one’s action. Both students and teachers need to perform the most effective and creative action for themselves, for both present and future success, and for the influence of their action in the environment.
The first topic Maharishi mentions is the art of performing an action with the least amount of energy. For this our thought must be powerful; a weak thought will necessitate a great amount of exertion to accomplish the action, whereas a powerful thought will easily find its way to materialization.
Highly developed power of thought comes from the twice daily practice of the Transcendental Meditation Technique, which scientific research has shown, develops integrated brain functioning; one also begins to use more hidden brain reserves. More of full potential is developed in a very natural, effortless, and enjoyable way.
Maharishi explains that the surroundings and circumstances should also be favourable to the performance of an action. ‘That is, the surroundings should also feel the need of the action,’ Maharishi said, ‘and hope to receive something useful. The surrounding atmosphere then becomes favourable for the performance of an action and its performance becomes easy and harmonious.’
The actor or doer of the action should be powerful and energetic, Maharishi added. ‘The practice of Transcendental Meditation takes the mind to the source of all creation, which is the field of limitless life energy,’ Maharishi said.
Coming directly in tune with the field of limitless life energy, known in quantum physics as the Unified Field of Natural Law, the conscious mind gains such a great vitality that any action can be easily handled and performed quickly without strain and with great success.
For the art of performing action in the least amount of time, self-confidence, preciseness of decision, and exact thinking are necessary. The increasing fast pace of modern life necessitates great presence of mind, a developed intellect, and an energetic and vital personality. Tension is created if we are not able to keep pace with the fast tempo of modern life.
‘Speed in action is a must for a joyful life in the world of today,’ Maharishi said. ‘The aspiration of modern man is to live on earth when the sun shines during the day and to fly to the moon at night when it shines on the Milky Way. Success of action demands that man should be energetic, intelligent, quick, and self-confident.’
The factor of time is very vital in life. ‘Those who accomplished great things in the world have been those who valued time in their life,’ Maharishi said. He explained that when the life of an individual is supplemented by the experience of Being, Transcendental Consciousness, our own unbounded Self, then life becomes free from all types of resistance, inner and outer.
‘Great self-confidence, clarity, and power of mind dawn in the individual, and harmony and favourable influence in the surroundings naturally create a basically congenial atmosphere for an action to be performed in the least amount of time.
‘Thus the art of performing an action in the least amount of time finds its fulfilment in the infusion of Being in the nature of the mind through the regular practice of Transcendental Meditation,’ Maharishi concluded.
