The ocean of pure consciousness: Dr David Lynch
by Global Good News staff writer

In September 2005, Dr David Lynch, renowned filmmaker and founder of the David Lynch Foundation for Consciousness-Based Education and World Peace, spoke at the Majestic Theatre, in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Entitled ‘Consciousness, Creativity, and the Brain,’ the conference was part of a speaking tour Dr Lynch made with Dr John Hagelin, world renowned quantum physicist and Executive Director of the International Center for Invincible Defense in New York City, USA,* to introduce Consciousness-Based Education to students and educators around the United States.

During this conference held in Boston a member of the audience who makes film and teaches film production, asked Dr Lynch how meditation connects to his creative process and how it might help the creative process of her students or herself?

Dr Lynch answered that his talk was about consciousness, creativity and the brain, and  ‘if you have a golf ball-size consciousness, when you read a book you'll have a golf ball-size understanding; when you look out, a golf ball-size awareness; and when you wake up in the morning, a golf ball size wakefulness.

‘But if you could expand that consciousness, then you read the book, more understanding; you look out, more awareness; and when you wake up, more wakefulness. It's [all] consciousness.’

He explained that there is an ocean of pure, vibrant consciousness inside each one of us, which is at the source and base of mind. ‘[It’s] right at the source of thought, and it's also at the source of all matter,’ he said.

Transcendental Meditation, as taught by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, is a simple, easy, natural technique, yet the experience is profound. This technique allows any human being ‘to dive within,’ Dr Lynch said, to experience subtler levels of mind and intellect and to transcend, [meaning to go beyond], to experience this ocean of pure consciousness.

‘This pure consciousness is called by modern physics the Unified Field,’ Dr Lynch continued. ‘It is at the basis of all mind and all matter.’ Modern science explains that all matter—‘everything that is a thing,’ Dr Lynch said—emerges from this field, ‘which has qualities of bliss, intelligence, creativity, universal love, energy, peace.’

Dr Lynch emphasized that it is not the intellectual understanding of this field, but the experiencing of it that accomplishes everything.

‘You dive within,’ he said, ‘and [by] transcending, experiencing this field of pure consciousness, you enliven it; you unfold it. It grows. And the final outcome of this growth of consciousness is called enlightenment. Enlightenment is the full potential of all of us human beings. A side effect of enlivening this consciousness is negativity starts to recede. . . . .

‘So it's money in the bank to get that beautiful consciousness growing, which is flowing creativity—the ability to catch ideas at a deeper level.

‘Intuition grows,’ he said. ‘This field is a field of pure knowingness. You dive in there and you sort of just know how to go; you know how to solve—solutions. It's like an ocean of solutions. And you can just feel this thing growing. But the ultimate thing for me is the enjoyment of the doing, the enjoyment of life grows—huge.’

Dr Lynch said that he now loves making films more than ever before because ideas flow more. The experience of pure consciousness had an influence on his work right from the very beginning. He explained that the bliss of the Unified Field, 'they say, is the sweetest nectar of life. Bliss is physical, emotional, mental, spiritual happiness, and you can vibrate with this bliss.

‘It's this happiness from within,’ he continued. ‘There is a saying, “True happiness isn't out there; true happiness lies within.” ’ Dr Lynch had always wondered where is this ‘within’? ‘It isn’t said where it is or even how to get to it,’ he said.

‘This is the beauty of this technique,’ he continued. ‘There are many forms of meditation but with Transcendental Meditation, to me, the key is the word ‘‘transcend’’—to dive all the way in. [There’s] a huge realm between the surface of life and this fundamental pure consciousness, but it's there, and when you're in it, you know you're in it. It's familiar but it's you.

‘And right away there’s a happiness, but it's not like a goof-ball happiness. It's a thick beauty, a thick beauty to appreciate life and living. And why suffer? People say you've got to have anger, you've got to have an edge in order to create.

‘You’ve got to have energy and clarity to be able to create. You've got to be able to catch ideas....

‘It is going to be a better world, but it's still a very tough world, and this just gives you more and more ability to say it just looks beautiful. It's way, way better, and this happened right away.’

A wave of laughter and applause rippled through the audience when Dr Lynch asked for a glass of water. 'It’s really good,’ he said, 'it's not quite as good as pure consciousness, but it's really good.’
