It is natural in life to want more and more happiness. The value of contentment and the need for it in the heart and mind of everyone is illuminated and brought to fulfilment in the following excerpt from Thirty Years Around the World, Dawn of the Age of Enlightenment

In the passage below, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi discusses the mind’s thirst to experience great happiness in life in order to eliminate the basis of worries, anxieties, and discontent, and to make peace permanent in the world. He emphasizes the word ‘first’ in Christ’s declaration, ‘First seek ye the Kingdom of Heaven and all else will be added unto thee’ and offers a simple technology which dissolves stress and tension, brings contentment to the individual, the state of peace in life, and the Kingdom of Heaven on earth.

Maharishi emphasized the value of contentment and the need for this quality in the mind and heart of every man, and he explained how practice of the Transcendental Meditation Technique naturally produces the quality of contentment.

‘All the discontent of the mind in the world is due to not being able to experience great happiness in life. If something could provide great happiness, which would satisfy the thirst of happiness of the mind, then the mind would be contented. . . . Discontent is the root cause of all stress and suffering and all corruptions of individual life, social life, and of all disharmony, frustrations, tensions; they are all due to inner discontent—not being able to find a source of happiness which would bring contentment to the mind.

‘All frustrations immediately disappear through the practice of Transcendental Meditation —all the mental frustrations, worries, and anxieties disappear. They disappear only on the basis of direct experience of great happiness within, which provides contentment to the mind . . .and freedom from worries and tensions of life. This is a theory which, though it seems to be new, it’s nothing new. It is that which Christ declared about 2, 000 years ago: “First seek ye the Kingdom of Heaven and all else will be added unto thee.” It is “First seek ye the Kingdom of Heaven.” This is the field of the Kingdom of Heaven, which is directly open to everyone. Only here is a technique to get it.

‘A technique is a thing which serves the purpose quickly and easily. A big rock is not able to be pushed aside by 1,500 people. A man who knows the technique of a lever comes and pulls the lever and throws back the rock. So this is the technique of getting within. And if the technique is in accordance with the tendency of the mind—every mind is searching for greater happiness—turn the phase of experience from gross to subtle, and it goes by itself.

‘We are in the jet age today, this is the jet age . . . everything has to be fast. No chance of dullness and derogatory habits in life. So the mind’s evolution also comes fast, suited to the present tempo of modern living. . . .

‘This is just the tendency of the age. Too much fuss about exploring outer space. Here is the technique for exploring the inner space and getting the Kingdom of Heaven on earth, here and now. This is something very useful. And we are so happy today. . . . This is fulfilment of the need of the time.

‘Every man, collectively in the society, and individually, needs some technique of peace. Peace will never be permanent unless great happiness is experienced—inner or outer, doesn’t matter, but great happiness should be experienced. And that happiness alone will make the mind contented. And that contented state alone will be the state of peace in life. In the outside world with the accumulation of everything of a material nature, it will not be able to satisfy the thirst for happiness of the mind. Mind is thirsty for great happiness. It will not be satisfied till it begins to experience the greatest happiness of a permanent nature. Transcendental Meditation alone fulfils that—it alone satisfies that quest of the mind for great happiness.

‘This is open to all people of all religions . . . . This meditation is something for which Christianity stands, for which Buddhism stands, for which Hinduism stands. All these religions stand, and all these great masters of all religions stood for bringing a simple technique to man for peace and happiness in life and greater achievement . . . .

‘Transcendental Meditation is a simple technique of inner unfoldment. Only it is necessary for some good people who really want to help others to help this movement so that it may reach every man everywhere. Experience yourself and help it to reach everyone everywhere.’
