The Maharishi School boys tennis team recently set a state record with their 13th trip to the final four at the state tennis tournament, coming away with second place. It was the 10th time that they've made it to the championship match—winning on four of those occasions.
The team qualified by coming out on top in district competition, then winning the substate championship. They won their first match at state by a score of 5-0, but lost in the final to a much larger school from Waterloo.
The team members who competed at state include Thomas Weiss, Joseph Gelfand, Derek Thatcher, Sam Arsanjani, Jay Stewart, and Raffi Gelfand.
In addition, Mr. Weiss and Mr. Thatcher won third place in the state doubles competition, and Joseph Gelfand came in sixth in state singles. In both competitions, the Maharishi School tennis players lost to the eventual champion.
The girls tennis team made it to the regional final, losing to perennial powerhouse Camanche. The team of Angela Sickler and Minna Mohammadi qualified for the state competition in doubles.
The boys are coached by Lawrence Eyre, who has won the national award for high school tennis coach of the year, and the girls are coached by Laurie Eyre.
