Maharishi Invincibility Institute in Johannesburg currently has about 250 students enrolled. The students will do the first phase of their undergraduate work enrolled in Maharishi Institute, and then will apply to Maharishi University of Management (MUM) to transfer that credit and take their third and fourth years as MUM students to finish up their degree.
According to Dennis Heaton, dean of distance education and international programs, the courses will be taught via an online course management system in conjunction with live conferencing.
"We're pleased to have created this partnership, and to now be offering MUM's education in yet another country," Dr. Heaton said.
The Institute first opened in 2007 and provides higher education to a broad spectrum of students who didn't previously have this opportunity, especially those in the impoverished outlying townships such as Soweto.
Helping to cover the cost of their education is the school's Invincible Outsourcing program, which lets the students gain practical experience working in enterprises such as a call center located at the Institute. This work experience not only helps financially but is also integrated with their academic work.
Dr. Heaton and Scott Herriott, cochair of the management department, have been working with Taddy Blecher, CEO of Maharishi Invincibility Institute, and Peter Mabila, academic administrator there, to set up the new partnership. "This partnership between Maharishi Invincibility Institute and Maharishi University of Management was fostered by the Founder of our University, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, who felt that it would support the creation of university campuses across South Africa, Africa, and the whole world," Dr. Blecher said.
The Institute is located in downtown Johannesburg in a 100,000-square-foot,, nine-story building that was donated by the largest company in the country. The building has capacity to house up to 2,000 students in full-time and part-time programs.
