Eric Schwartz, CEO and Founder of Cambridge Investment Research, started his financial advisory business in 1981 in Maryland. In search of a more peaceful and healthier environment, he and his wife Mary Sue moved to Fairfield, Iowa, in 1992.
Relocating the business to Fairfield turned out to have other advantages as well. The company can stay more competitive due to the lower overhead costs and can draw from the highly educated Iowa workforce. Since 1981, the number of employees has increased from 5 to 360 and Cambridge became one of the fastest growing broker/dealers and investment advisors in the country and the winner of Investment Advisor magazine’s coveted “Broker/Dealer of the Year” award in 2003, 2007, and 2008.
“The low stress environment of the rural area combined with the positive influence from the practice of the Transcendental Meditation technique creates the benefit of clearer thinking, keener intuition, and a more efficient, faster-growing organization,” said Mr. Schwartz.
Cambridge employs many Maharishi University of Management (MUM) graduates. The Technology Department has the highest percentage of them as a result of the University’s ongoing commitment to high-quality computer science and information technology education.
Mr. Schwartz has practiced the Transcendental Meditation technique for 39 years and is a supporter of Maharishi University of Management and Consciousness-Based Education. Keeping an open mind, maintaining an upbeat attitude, and seeing opportunities in problems are some of the benefits of the technique he found helped him run his organization.
Last year, Mr. Schwartz joined the Board of Trustees of MUM and he hopes to contribute to long-term strategic planning, which is his area of specialty. He also provided a major donation to the new Sustainable Living Center. “This building has a huge potential for MUM,” Mr. Schwartz said. “We could have 1,000 students there and become the leading program in sustainability in the country; that would be great for the University and Fairfield.”
Mr. Schwartz is also a member of the founding board of directors of the Financial Services Institute (FSI), the advocacy voice of independent broker/dealers and the financial advisors they serve. He has been featured in the cover stories of numerous major industry publications. Most recently, the May, 2010 issue of Investment Advisor magazine named Mr. Schwartz a visionary and one of the 30 most influential individuals in and around the planning profession over the last three decades.
