Beginning this fall, Maharishi University of Management will offer a new opportunity for MBA students to develop knowledge and skills to fill the projected high demand for professional accountants in the U.S. and internationally.
Building on the success of the Accounting Professionals MBA program that was established in 2005 for international accountants with two or more years of work experience, the new MBA accounting specialization will consist of 11 months of full-time study and no curricular practical training.
"This new specialization in accounting will allow MUM to attract students who currently aren't eligible to participate in the Accounting Professionals MBA program because they don't have enough work experience," said Scott Herriott, cochair of the management department.
All applicants in the new program will be required to have a four-year bachelor's degree in business (commerce), accounting, or related area. But work experience is not required.
Andrew Bargerstock, who developed the concept of the new program, said that there will be two new MBA accounting tracks based on the student's previous academic background in accounting: "fresh start" and "strong background."
The fresh start group requires no previous accounting courses or work experience, and new groups will begin in August each year. During the first semester, students will take a specially designed series of accounting courses to build technical competencies. In the second semester, students will join the existing Accounting Professionals MBA program classes for six months to complete their degree. There is no curricular practical training in this track.
Due to their strong previous academic background in accounting (at least four courses), the strong background group will enter the MBA program in January each year starting 2012. They will participate in courses offered to the Accounting Professionals MBA program. After completing the first seven on-campus courses, the strong background students may choose an elective set of four courses to complete their MBA degree. There is no curricular practical training in this track.
Undergraduate business majors who wish to specialize in accounting may be permitted to participate in the two intermediate accounting courses.
