As a student looking to your future, you may dream of a peaceful world, free from wars, crime, even natural disasters. But what can you do to create such a world? What is your role as a student and citizen of your country to create a peaceful nation and world? And even if somehow wars and crime stop, surely there is nothing to do about natural disasters? Or is there?
In a fascinating press release from the International Center for Invincible Defense, the centre’s executive director, quantum physicist Dr John Hagelin, explains that conflicts, such as that in the Middle East, and natural disasters, such as the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, surprisingly have a common underlying cause. Morever, they can be prevented by applying technologies of the ancient Vedic Science of consciousness, which is where students can play their role.
The need to eliminate stress, the cause of conflict and disaster
First, referring to the press release, let’s take a close look at the functioning of nature at its deepest level from the perspective of Vedic Science with the support of discoveries of modern physics and neuroscience. What this knowledge reveals is an underlying common root of both ‘man-made’ violence and natural calamities: ‘the buildup of acute stress in the collective consciousness of societies.’
As a science of consciousness, Vedic Science, as brought to light in its completeness in this generation by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, ‘provides the knowledge and technologies to predict, prevent, and neutralize man-made and nature-made disasters,’ Dr Hagelin explained in the press release. Specifying the techniques to which he is referring, the physicist said, ‘These technologies include Transcendental Meditation and its advanced techniques, including Yogic Flying, which create a powerful influence of coherence in collective consciousness, reducing built-up stress in the life of the people and restoring balance in nature.’
Dr Hagelin emphasized the need for such technologies pointing out that with the increase in terrorism, ‘it is naïve to believe the military is a sustainable approach to safeguarding the nation. . . . Conventional means of defense are increasingly irrelevant. With the rise of terrorism, and biological and chemical weapons, it is more crucial than ever that we do everything in our power to prevent the outbreak of war.’
Taking his point one step further, Dr Hagelin emphasized that military action and treaties do not address the underlying cause of social unrest and stated, ‘”The only way to prevent war is to neutralize the high levels of racial, ethnic and religious tensions that underlie social conflict.”’
The efficacy of Maharishi’s Technologies of Consciousness
Dr Hagelin cited ‘extensive research published in leading peer-reviewed scientific journals, including Yale’s Journal of Conflict Resolution, [which] has shown that even a small number of people (as little as a few hundred to a few thousand experts) in a country practicing these technologies [of the Transcendental Meditation Programme and its advanced techniques, including Yogic Flying] together dramatically reduces crime, violence, and conflict.’
The scientist also referred to the effect of the Invincible America Assembly, at Maharishi University of Management and Maharishi Vedic City in Iowa, a large gathering which Maharishi inspired starting July 23, 2006. The on-going assembly has about 2000 experts practising the Transcendental Meditation Programme and its advanced techniques, including Yogic Flying, together twice daily.
Dr Hagelin shared the extraordinary effects of the assembly. ‘As predicted in advance, there has been a dramatic and sustained decrease in violent crime in the United States since the Assembly began. In fact, the number of murders is now the lowest in four decades, according to the FBI Uniform Crime Reports,’ he stated.
The physicist referred to the ‘Meissner Effect’]‘an indomitable influence of coherence, which neutralizes negative influences from inside or from outside the nation’—to explain how a group practising Maharishi’s Technologies of Consciousness can create an invincible shield for the nation, including protection against any military threat.
It is simply this that the Invincible America Assembly is doing. By creating coherence in the collective consciousness of the US, behaviour in that society naturally is becoming more harmonious and life-supporting.
The influence of the assembly extends beyond reduced crime to ‘the dramatic decline in the number of destructive hurricanes and tropical storms hitting the US since the start of the Assembly,’ the last major hurricane being in 2005, the year before the assembly began. As predicted by Vedic Science, group practice of Maharishi’s Transcendental Meditation and advanced techniques, including Yogic Flying, not only affect human behaviour, but ‘promote greater balance and less violence in nature.’ Dr Hagelin said that now, with the rise of collective consciousness, ‘nature is responding more positively. ‘As you sow, so shall you reap’ is now becoming a scientific phenomenon.’
A student’s great role
With this in mind, the role of a student in creating a peaceful world—free from crime, conflict, and natural disasters—is simply to create coherence through Maharishi’s Technologies of Consciousness. While growing to perfection in their own lives, students can assure a peaceful world around themselves.
Maharishi has likened this peace-creating role of a student to the role of a gardener. ‘A gardener waters the root and supplies nourishment to all the expressions of the sap. So the students have to enliven their own consciousness and, as soon as possible, through daily practice of all that we have been teaching [Maharishi’s Transcendental Meditation and advanced techniques, including Yogic Flying], to rise to unity consciousness, rise to perfection in life.’ (The Role of Students in Creating a Peaceful World)
Maharishi goes on to explain that when one is of student age, that is the time to raise consciousness to the highest value, the cosmic value of life, both through knowledge and direct experience, so that one can live the total value of life.
Growing to the full value of life through Maharishi’s Technologies of Consciousness—this is the importance of student life for students themselves. And by creating coherence in their own brain physiology and thereby creating a powerful influence of coherence in collective consciousness, students can simultaneously neutralize stress in the world to establish world peace and restore balance in nature.
