Maria Marino grew up in the city of Cuernavaca, Mexico, and after graduating from high school she traveled around India and Nepal. During her time in India, she vowed to find a college where she could meditate and maintain a high-quality, stress-free lifestyle. When she returned home, she discovered Maharishi University of Management (MUM) and enrolled in 2007.

She was drawn to study art, which she had pursued in the Waldorf school she attended in Mexico. After trying several art forms, Maria settled on painting. “Art is a great program to study with Consciousness-Based education because everything that has to do with art has to do with consciousness,” she said.

While at MUM, Maria learned the Transcendental Meditation-Sidhi program. In July, she graduated with a BFA degree and received the Outstanding Student Award from the Department of Art.

“She is an exceptional artist who has established a deep connection with her own Self, pure consciousness,” said James Shrosbree, department chair and professor of art. “She's an exuberant example of growth and maturity for other students.”

Maria appreciates the MUM faculty and their support in her development not only as a student but also as an individual. “There is a maturity in the relationship between the students and the teachers,” she said. “You don’t have to prove you are good enough here — you are already good enough. You just have to dive in and keep developing and exploring.”

Maria has returned to Mexico and plans to work with the sustainable education campaign FOUR YEARS. GO — with the goal of creating an environmentally sustainable and socially just future. Maria is also studying spiritual counseling, including the traditions of the Thirteen Indigenous Grandmothers, with the Center for Sacred Studies.
