On July 2, 277 students representing 44 countries graduated from Maharishi University of Management, including 55 undergraduate students, 218 graduate students, and 4 PhD students.
The commencement address was given by Dr. Norman Rosenthal, author of The New York Times bestseller Transcendence: Healing and Transformation through Transcendental Meditation. Dr. Rosenthal is a distinguished clinical professor of psychiatry at Georgetown University Medical School and former senior researcher at the National Institute of Mental Health.
This year’s valedictorian was Angela Folz, who received a BS in mathematics with a minor in physics. Salutatorian Lyndi Ouellette announced the class gift to the University, a $1500 donation to the new Sustainable Living Center.
Dr. John Hagelin offered congratulatory remarks to the graduates. After all the degrees had been awarded, University president Dr. Bevan Morris delivered the traditional charge to the graduates, quoting from Maharishi’s 2006 address to the graduating class: “Our University students, wherever they are, they shine as stars in space.”
In his commencement address, Dr. Rosenthal offered 7 pearls of wisdom from his own life to the graduating students. “The practice of meditation should remind you that you deserve to set aside the time to get to know yourself and to be yourself,” he said. He also encouraged students to be open to new possibilities, not to hold grudges, do well by doing good, cultivate good habits, and pursue their dreams.
During his 20 years at the National Institute of Mental Health, Dr. Rosenthal achieved renown by leading the team that identified and described Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and pioneered the use of light therapy to treat it. Dr. Rosenthal was awarded the prestigious Anna Monika Foundation Research prize for his contribution to research in treating depression. He has been listed as one of the Best Doctors in America and as one of the country’s top psychiatrists.
