Through a Chinese student's eyes

Kai Fu, a software developer, travelled half-way around the world from his homeland in China to be a student in Maharishi University of Management’s (MUM’s) Master of Science in Computer Science programme. Although in going to MUM he was fulfilling the American dream he had growing up, nonetheless he felt some concerns about how it would be to live in a different place, surrounded by different people. But all worries vanished as soon as his classes started.

To start, Kai speaks enthusiastically about MUM’s courses. He feels that the professional and very knowledgeable faculty members offer excellent—and challenging—classes and appreciates that the professors are always willing to help out. Kai also values MUM’s ‘block system’ in which students take one month-long course at a time.

A special quality of MUM, Kai points out, is that it is the centre for Consciousness-Based Education. He notes that this method of education not only provides quality education, but that it is designed to fulfil the full value of each student.

At the core of Consciousness-Based Education is Maharishi’s Transcendental Meditation Technique. Kai experiences that, as a result of this meditation, he is relieved of all stress and feels happier and healthier, both mentally and physically. ‘I feel so great,’ Kai exclaims. ‘I think the students cannot gain this from any other university in the US.’

Kai also enjoys the international flavour of MUM where students from over 60 countries live and work together as a family. He expresses his feeling that the whole environment is very wonderful, everyone being helpful and friendly, everybody being part of a big family.

Addressing prospective students, Kai reflects, ‘MUM has changed my life entirely,’ and then adds, ‘I strongly recommend that you choose this university and this computer professionals’ programme. I’m sure it’s gonna be your most right decision if you come. So join us.’ With a smile and laughter he affirms, ‘I bet you’ll like it.’

An Indian student’s perspective

Another student, Ankur Goyal, also travelled half-way around the world to join MUM’s Master of Science in Computer Science programme. The Indian software developer had considered going to New Zealand or Australia to work on his degree but was thrilled by the practical programme MUM offers. He explains that a student only needs to pay 10% of the tuition initially. With that small investment, he or she can study on-campus for about eight months and then gain well-paid practical training for two years in the American computer industry. (Google, Microsoft, and IBM are among over 800 US companies who have hired MUM Master of Science in Computer Science students in high-paying training positions.)

‘It’s like wow,’ Ankur happily appreciates his good fortune to have come to MUM’s programme. ‘I’m really inspired and honoured to be here.’

Like Kai, Ankur finds the coursework very challenging. He particularly values that the courses are industry-oriented and, also reflecting Kai’s sentiments, appreciates the block system. Being able to take one course at a time, he feels, gives pleasure and focus for the subject being studied.

As meditation is quite familiar to the Indian student, his feelings about the Transcendental Meditation Technique are especially significant. Ankur says, ‘I’m really honoured to receive that meditation. There are so many meditations in India and I practised a lot there as well but I found this really different. And I personally feel I found a lot of changes in me after going through this meditation. I found a relaxed, timed routine for the whole day and everything is well organized now for me. He reinforces his satisfaction with the Transcendental Meditation Programme saying, ‘I hope I will keep on doing this meditation forever in life.’

Ankur concludes expressing his feelings about MUM by encouraging others to come. ‘I’m sure the people, the aspiring students who are thinking to come here, they will surely enjoy the environment, the world culture, and the programme over here and the friendship with the international students. I’m sure you guys will love it,’ he says, a big smile underscoring his words.
