Earlier this month Maharishi University of Management completed an agreement for student exchange with the European University of Madrid in Spain (UEM), a private university that teaches many courses in English and that will provide MUM students an opportunity to study abroad.
According to Scott Herriott, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, a foreign study program will be organized such that MUM students can study at UEM for a semester, and MUM faculty can be resident at UEM as visiting professors.
"To me, one of the most exciting projects will be a joint MUM-UEM 'rotating university' program in South Africa in the spring of 2012 to develop the Maharishi Institute's 11,000-acre Ezemvelo Nature Reserve into an ecotourism destination," Dr. Herriott said.
UEM international tourism and business majors will combine with MUM's students from sustainable living, business, and other fields, and with business students from the Maharishi Institute in Johannesburg, to study
ecotourism and work on the project.
Dr. Herriott also said that UEM students in several different majors will likely come to Fairfield to take courses.
Premedical students at UEM are required to study three to six months abroad, preferably in an English-speaking country. "We hope that many of them will take advantage of the unique knowledge of complementary medicine available in our Physiology & Health programs," he said.
In addition, UEM recently introduced a master's degree in sustainability in their School of Architecture, so they are interested in cooperating with MUM on a joint MBA degree specializing in sustainable business.
Also, the UEM School of Art and Communication offers a bachelor's in Media Studies and Multimedia with specializations in digital environments, film, television, radio, and photography—a program that is similar to MUM's bachelor's degree in Media & Communications and that offers its students the opportunity to study abroad in exchange programs.
Representing MUM in this partnership is Dr. Herriott, and representing UEM is Dr. Ricardo Garcia-Viana Brookes, International Manager in UEM's School of Social Sciences.
