Emily recently spent three weeks in Honduras at a rural clinic practicing family medicine and found it very rewarding to work with patients and offer them help.

Maharishi University of Management (MUM) alumna Emily Marcus is graduating from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland this month and will begin her postdoctoral training in internal medicine at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital in June.
Emily always liked science and studied Maharishi Vedic Medicine at MUM. After doing an internship with Dr. Nancy Lonsdorf in Fairfield and volunteering at various clinics, she decided to pursue medicine. “I found it very rewarding to work with patients and offer them help,” said Emily.
Emily loved the small class sizes at MUM and the individual help she received from her teachers. She finds her practice of the Transcendental Meditation technique helped her throughout her studies and career. “Stress is such an issue in my job and I’m lucky to have a technique to easily get away and relax in a few minutes,” she said.
After graduating as valedictorian from MUM in 2004, Emily took pre-med classes at the University of Iowa and worked as a research assistant in a genetics laboratory. In 2007, she was accepted to Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
As part of her studies, Emily recently spent three weeks in Honduras at a rural clinic practicing family medicine, which included taking care of adults and children and helping deliver babies. “It’s very different when you work in a small clinic with limited resources and you are dealing with patients who don’t have continuous access to medicine,” Emily said. “It was challenging, but also very rewarding.”
Emily also enjoys teaching, and while at MUM, she spent her summers teaching math in a summer academic program for middle school children. More recently, she taught health education at Dunbar Middle School in Baltimore, Maryland.
