Dr. Morris met with TM practitioners throughout the continent, as well as meeting with educators and government leaders who were interested in Consciousness-Based education.

Maharishi University of Management (MUM) President Dr. Bevan Morris is completing a three-month 14-nation tour of Africa, where he is speaking about Consciousness-Based education to educators and government leaders, and meeting with enthusiastic groups of students and adults practicing the Transcendental Meditation technique throughout the continent.

The tour began in Ghana, where Dr. Morris addressed a conference of educators and high-level government officials, encouraging them to adopt Consciousness-Based education and the Transcendental Meditation technique to develop the full creative intelligence of every student. The conference received media coverage and generated public interest in the programs.

Togo’s Minister of Justice was deeply impressed by the scientific research on the Transcendental Meditation program. He expressed special interest in what happened in nearby Senegal in the late 1980s, when 11,000 prisoners from 31 prisons were instructed in the Transcendental Meditation technique. Dramatic results were noticed within just a few weeks. Recidivism dropped from 90 percent to less than 3 percent for the TM group. Prison violence all but disappeared, and three prisons closed for lack of inmates. Upon reviewing this research, the Minister of Justice responded by saying, “I want to do this immediately in all our prisons.”

Dr. Morris spent a month in South Africa, where one of the highlights was a visit to the Maharishi Invincibility Institute in Johannesburg, which currently has over 200 students. The facility and its programs, which include daily group practice of the Transcendental Meditation technique and the TM-Sidhi program, enjoy wide corporate sponsorship.

In Mozambique, Dr. Morris was warmly welcomed by former President Joaquim Chissano, one of the most respected African statesmen, and their discussions centered on the building of the Mozambique Invincibility School, re-introducing the Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi programs in the military, and Maharishi Vedic Organic Agriculture projects.

In Kenya, Dr. Morris met with the head of the Kenya Institute of Education. After hearing about the universal application of the TM technique, she wants all the teachers of Kenya to hear about Consciousness-Based education. The past Nairobi Headmistress spoke very highly of the benefits of Transcendental Meditation technique that she observed in a girl's school where TM was introduced.

“We find openness in these nations, really on a different plateau than any time in the past,” Dr. Morris said.

In Uganda, Dr. Morris and Raja Graham deFreitas traveled to Mbale, where they visited the Maharishi Girls’ Secondary School. The 60 students include girls from Kenya as well as Uganda.

In Kampala, the capital city of Uganda, Dr. Morris visited a school for AIDS orphans who have learned the TM technique along with their caretakers. The leaders of the program want to expand the TM technique to the entire community and create a group of Yogic Flyers for national invincibility.
