Businesses today must take into consideration the "big picture" and not only be accountable for financial results, but also social and environmental results, writes Maharishi University of Management professor Dennis Heaton in a recently published editorial in the Journal of Business & Hotel Management.
He says that sustainability must be integrated into business practice and that the usual business practice of "take, make, waste" is no longer acceptable.
Making this change requires shifting one's mindset to envision how businesses can do well by improving the social and environmental circumstances. This mindset shift entails a shift in consciousness so that one is more open to processes that are more holistic and include values, caring, and imagination.
"Business activity exists within the context of the natural laws of the planetary environment," he writes. "The more we can orient our lives to be in tune with those laws of nature for our individual well-being, then the greater good we can create for the health of our economy, and the thriving of the natural systems in our planetary environment."
He says that the transformation to new business practices depends on the capability of management education to cultivate sustainable minds attuned to the larger system of nature that nourishes all life and growth.
