Sustainability is the new focus of the PhD in Management this fall at Maharishi University of Management.
It's a natural progression from the successful MBA in sustainability that the management department has been offering, said Maxwell Rainforth, associate director of the PhD in Sustainable Management.
"Our PhD students are interested in sustainability, so it was a natural fit," he said. "Many of our current students have already done or are doing dissertations focused on sustainability."
He said that sustainability has become a niche for MUM, beginning with the pioneering BS in Sustainable Living followed by the MBA in Sustainability.
"In addition, Maharishi explained in his Science of Creative Intelligence course that there's an intimate connection between the environment and the development of consciousness, which is our special focus at MUM," Dr. Rainforth said.
The PhD has three components: 1) developing holistic consciousness in the manager, 2) managing the transformation of organizations toward sustainable practices, and 3) the measurement and communication of sustainability outcomes.
Dissertation research topics have included the effects of green-certified building, development economics based on natural law, and brain integration and management integrity.
The program admitted seven new students this fall.
