Iowa Senator Tom Harkin, who has served in the Senate since 1985 and also served in the House of Representatives from 1975–1985, will deliver MUM's 2013 commencement address.
Senator Harkin is known for his strong interest in alternative medicine and sustainability.
He has visited campus twice. In 2004, when he was working on health care legislation, he came to learn more about MUM's prevention-oriented wellness program and the NIH-funded research in natural medicine.
Senator Harkin had a long and stimulating discussion with faculty, administrators, and researchers.
"We were impressed with his commitment to a strong public health system, founded upon preventive care," said Craig Pearson, MUM executive vice-president.
Senator Harkin also visited MUM's new Sustainable Living Center last August. In discussions he showed a keen interest and deep knowledge of energy and environmental issues.
During a radio interview the Senator conducted on the steps of the building, he said he would recommend that people come here to see best practices and get ideas for sustainable energy.
Senator Harkin is chairman of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions and is the seventh most senior Senator overall.
The city of Fairfield, which includes Maharishi University of Management, was selected by the Smithsonian as one of The 20 Best Small Towns to Visit in 2013, and is featured in the magazine's April issue as the seventh town.
